    Charmed Life

When I hold you in my arms,
And look back on my charmed life
I hope, I hope if nothing more
That one day you’ll call your life
    A charmed life

Well I never really worried that much
About making lots of money and such
And I always seemed to land on my feet.

Though there’s been some difficult times
The good times where never far behind
I snatched all of my victories from the jaws of defeat

When I hold you in my arms,
And look back on my charmed life
I hope, I hope if nothing more
That one day you’ll call your life
    A charmed life

Well the course of true love never ran smooth
They broke my heart, and I broke theirs too
And breaking up was so very hard to do
But I knew I’d find the one
And sure enough she came along
And not long after that along came you

Well sometimes this life is like being afloat
On a raging sea in a little row boat
Just trying not to be washed overboard
But if you take your chances and you ride your luck
And you never, never, never, never, never give up
Well those waves will see you safely to a friendly shore

When I hold you in my arms,
I know that this is a charmed life
    A charmed life

You've convinced me. I'll get my kit on. Back in ten mile.
Divine Comedy are great...I hadn't made the connection but now I'm off to listen to some on Spotify. I love the one about the woodshed and national express.

They're my favourite. Some of his later, more orchestral stuff is magnificent. Listen to "Mutual Friend" if you can. Lyrics take me back to fickle teenage love and the instrumental bit in the middle is as good as some of Micheal Nyman's finest compositions, who I know influenced Neil Hannon. The "short album about love" is tops too.

This is another favourite. You might recognise the tune.

    Pale, pubescent beasts
    Roam through the streets
    And coffee-shops
    Their prey gather in herds
    Of stiff knee-length skirts
    And white ankle-socks
But while they search for a mate
    My type hibernate
    In bedrooms above
    Composing their songs of love

    Young, uniform minds
    In uniform lines
    And uniform ties
    Run 'round
    With trousers on fire
    And signs of desire
    They cannot disguise
While I try to find words
    As light as the birds
    That circle above
To put in my songs of love

Fate doesn't hang on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends on the tone of your voice
So sing while you have time
Let the sun shine down from above
And fill you with songs of love

Fate doesn't hang on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends on the tone of your voice
So let's sing while we still can
While the sun hangs high up above
    Wonderful songs of love
    Beautiful songs of love

Ooooo lots of activity on this here thread today! great!

i nearly chopped my thumb off today and got a bit lost on the fells whilst experiencing some nice stomach cramps...but then it is friday 13th!!!....despite this I have had a jolly lovely day which began with the purchase of a Pablo Neruda book.....

    Leaning into the afternoons

Leaning into the afternoons I cast my sad nets
    towards your oceanic eyes.

There in the highest blaze my solitude lengthens and flames,
its arms turning like a drowning man's.

I send out red signals across your absent eyes
that smell like the sea or the beach by a lighthouse.

You keep only darkness, my distant female,
from your regard sometimes the coast of dread emerges.

Leaning into the afternoons I fling my sad nets
to that sea that is thrashed by your oceanic eyes.

The birds of night peck at the first stars
that flash like my soul when I love you.

The night gallops on its shadowy mare
shedding blue tassels over the land.

    Pablo Neruda

I do apologise if I have posted this before, but well...its friday night and that means romance and in my case e e cummings......

    look
    my fingers,which
    touched you
    and your warmth and crisp
    littleness
    —see?do not resemble my
    fingers. My wrists hands
which held carefully the soft silence
    of you(and your body
    smile eyes feet hands)
    are different
from what they were. My arms
in which all of you lay folded
    quietly,like a
    leaf or some flower
    newly made by Spring
    Herself,are not my
    arms. I do not recognise
as myself this which i find before
me in a mirror. I do
    not believe
    i have ever seen these things;
    someone whom you love
    and who is slenderer
    taller than
myself has entered and become such
lips as i use to talk with,
a new person is alive and
    gestures with my
or is it perhaps you who
    with my voice
    are
    playing.

I think I've been paying attention all along, and I think that's a new one. And a lovely one it is too.

Not a lot of romance in this house, just me, the spiders and a load of work I should have done when I was reading this instead! (violins please folks ). However, I am loving listening to Divine Comedy's back catalogue on Spotify...thanks HHH and also I really enjoyed your two latest contributions Freckle. I will post a romantic poem later this evening for you chaps and so I don't get out of practise!

    'ere's another one of his...

    When I fall asleep
    It could be forever
So I'll never fall asleep again
    When I fall apart
    Put me back together
And my life will be complete
    Maybe it's tonight
    Maybe tomorrow night
    Next week
    Next month
    Next year
    We've only time to fear
    When I fall behind
    In the quest for pleasure
I shall treasure this short time with you
    We shall not be chained
    We shall not be tethered
    And we'll never be unkind
    Maybe it's tonight
    Maybe tomorrow night
    Next week
    Next month
    Next year
    We've only time to fear
    If I fall in love
    It will be forever
So I'll never fall in love
But the moment I can feel that
    You feel that way too
Is when I might fall in love with you

It's called Timewatching if you want to listen to it.
