    Impatience

    Full of verve
    I start to trot
    But I am soon reminded
    its Friday the 13th
    A fairy elephant
    Does not take to fells
    And that egg sandwich
    Well...

    My stomach hurts
    I’m getting cold
I really should be getting HOME
    But I don’t want to
    I trudge on
    Leaden of foot
    Simonside's hills looks on
    “Silly Lass” they utter
With their rain and sharp air

    Yet nature in its mocking
    Holds me with its grace
The softness of a forest floor
    An owl’s singular conversation
    Alluring, superlative solitude

    Later I drive home
Melting strokes from the air conditioning
    Beethoven’s “Romance” on the radio
    In the bath
I reluctantly scrub the peat from my toes
    My heart is already asking
“When will I know that again?”

not at all conventional and still needs work but the sentiment is there!

Good choice HHH. I have this album and it is great. I absolutely loved 'Our Mutual Friend', I haven't listened to it since I was in my twenties and you're right, definitely Nymanesque in the middle. Love Nyman - (and Peter Greenaway films).
This song is beautiful and worth a listen if you don't know it:

    Surprise Ice

When past sometimes takes you with soft hands
forcelessly pulls you to your chair
hides you away from these half days
sunless at the end of the year
the air is like a knife cutting through you
a room in the house is always warm
stretched out on the bathroom floor thinking
of fair days your future may hold

love comes like surprise ice on the water
love comes like surprise ice at dawn
love comes like surprise ice on the water
    love comes at dawn

deprived of the light and of the colours
the world ends at your window tree
    darkness creates these illusions
but pale days can teach you to see
rain falls but no life is given
weeks pass no progress is made

past sometimes takes you with soft hands
and all that surrounds you will fade

    (Kings of Convenience)

Blimey Freckle...good work, elements of comedy, melancholy and interesting imagery. I love this line "An owl’s singular conversation
Alluring, superlative solitude" and it is exactly what I wish I'd thought of saying in a poem that I'm working on.
