'Don't give a faeces' doesn't have the same ring to it although it could be the next anti-bullying slogan

On a (very) loosely connected note, does anyone know why Americans say "I could give a damn" and us Brits say "I couldn't give a damn"?

Are you accusing me of being a bully - do I need to set a popularity poll up to raise my self esteem

Clark Gable in Gone with the wind used the British version, as the censors made him put the emphasis on give rather than damn.
