Emotion - yes that puts a big bias on how we see things. (As do broken marriages, ho hum!)

The poem to me was full of beautiful layers of meaning until I got to the end...

I'll give it a week or so and read it again to see if my perception changes

I agree with hes's interpretation that possibly the man watching has been through some changes in his life, that have wearied him and that he finds reassurance in the swans and the sense of continuity they bring to his life. I wondered if he sounded a little envious of them in that they appear to be oblvious of eotional pain and I also wondered whether the "broken rings" might be indirectly referring to a roken marriage (but then again that might just be my bias!)....which brings me to another point touching on the analysis of poems. I think Hes makes another interesting point about her work in that she looks back and finds multiple layers of meaning to her work which may reflect her mind at the time of production...i also think with poetry we inevitably interpret it from our concious and unconscious standpoint and sometimes in terms of what is emotionally salient for us at the time. I think the latter is what can be quite therapeutic and ctahertic about the process of reading poetry.....

right i am off for a bit but hope to be back soon....

    evening all

It is a clear but bitter night out there. Someone over town sent up a chinese lantern about 10 minutes ago and I can still see it up there.

That'll be interesting, as I'm sure the mood and experiences of the reader will change how a poem is percieved.

Did you see the fox, or were you following prints?
I saw him and he was very brazen considering it was broad daylight!

I see them at work now again and sometimes you can get within 20 yards or so without them seeming bothered. It is amazing how bold they can be.

Not sure what the collective noun is for Haiku, but here's a few

    by Sonia Sanchez- enjoy.
    1
    Come windless invader
    I am a carnival of
    Stars a poem of blood.

    2
    I have caught fire from
Your mouth now you want me to
    Swallow the ocean.

    3
    When we say good-bye
I want yo tongue inside my
    Mouth dancing hello.

    4
    Mixed with day and sun
I crouched in the earth carry
    You like a dark river.

    5
    You too slippery
For me. Can't hold you long or
    Hard. Not enough nites.

    6
    Am I yo philly
Outpost? Man when you sail in
    To my house, you docked.

    7
    This is not a fire
Sale but I am in heat
    Each time I see ya.

    8
    I am who I am.
    Nothing hidden just black silk
    Above two knees.

    9
    I am you loving
    My own shadow watching
    This noontime butterfly.

    10
    Is there a fo rent
Sign on my butt? You got no
    Territorial rights here.

    11
    My face is a scarred
    Reminder of your easy
    Comings and goings.

    12
    Derelict with eyes
    I settle in a quiet
    Carnival of waves.

    13
    I want to make you
Roar with laughter as I ride
    You into morning.

    14
    I have carved you face
On my tongue and I speak you
    In my off-key voice.

    15
    the I in you the
    you in me colliding in
    one drop of semen

    16
    legs wrapped around you
    camera. action. Tightshot.
    This is not a rerun.

    17
    Sonku

    What I want
    From you can
    You give me? What
    I give to
    You do you
    Want?
    Hey? Hey?

    18
    love between us is
speech and breath. Loving you is
    a long river running.

    --------------------

Haiku [question from a young sister]

    1.

    what's wrong with being
freaky on stage you a stone
    freak in yo own skin.

    2.

    at least we up front
    about this freakdom. at least
we let it all hang out.

    --------------------

Walking in the rain in Guyana

    watusi like trees
holding the day like green um/
    brella catching rain.

    --------------------

    Sonku

    to worship
    until i
    become stone
    to love
    until i
    become bone.

    --------------------

    what is done is done
what is not done is not done
let it go [ldots] like the wind.

    let us be one with
    the earth expelling anger
    spirit unbroken.

    you are rock garden
    austere in your loving
    in exile from touch.

    mixed with day and sun
i crouched in the earth carry
    you like a dark river.

    To be born
    To die Each journey
    a sudden wave

    Re: Today's poet

Blooming heck! Haiku galore there. Some great passionate ones.

Recently I have been thinking about how haiku should be presented. I have an anthology and some pages can have five haiku on them. I think they lose something when presented en masse. The simplicity of a single haiku on a page is, for me, part of their essence. I have a couple ideas for some books of my own haiku. With one haiku on the left hand page and a simple black and white image on the right. I am considering embossing the words and the image so that there is no colour except the white of the page...

I also discovered that haiku that deal with human emotions are called senryu.
