    Nice chap though.
Yes, but there was a lot of mistakes though, especially in the chapters concerning Yorkshire
    Typical Lancastrian!

The next book 'Aventures On The High-Teas' was quite fun as well

All that said, he's a damn good radio presenter, & I still miss his Saturday afternoon show on Radio 2, but listen to him & Mark Radcliffes evening show whenever humanly possible

I recently read All Quiet on the Western Front. Cried a bit on the train at one point I seem to have a thing about books set in war times, I am not sure why. I read Birdsong by Sebatian Faulks too, that is one of my faves.

You would very probably like Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy then OTW.

well go for 'Regeneration', the first, which was made into a film

it stands alone as a novel so you don't need to read all three, although they might have been published in one volume iirc

Love Birdsong too OHW. As for war themed books and sobbing on trains, I was blubbing like a good'un to Birds Without Wings, another de Bernieres book (& loose prequel to Captain Correlli).

As for history, Jodg and I exchanged a couple of crackers: The Collapse of British Power by Corelli Barnett and Warsaw Rising. Still got to swap back.

Bought from one of those cheapy chain bookshops (Books Warehouse?) this weekend, a book called A Lifetime of Mountains. A collection of the fortnightly Country Diary pieces written for the Guardian by A. Harry Griffin.

Never heard of this chap, nor these articles before, but they're a cracking read. Genteel, but really evocative of the landscapes and people and cover a 50yr period - so really illustrate the changes in his home turf of the Lakes and beyond.

    Bargain at £2.99.
