    Re: Fellsman 2010

I only heard about this mighty event last night - hats off to you lads btw, I need to practice a bit more before attempting it, I only do the little stuff
Anyway, a friend of mine who IS doing it has a question regarding maps for the event, I've had a look at the earlier posts and it does mention a web site but he wants to know if you get the whole Fellsman route onto 1 (one) OS Select map? As I'm no OS Select expert (I had my first look today) I couldnt answer the question.
    So, any help gratefully received
    cheers alan

The whole route is on the OS 1:50000 sheet 98. Bear in mind that if you need to use the map during the event you are likely to be in trouble! If you need to refer to the map at night you are in BIG trouble!

The guys on this forum will tell you which sections need a recce so you can prepare pace notes and key bearings. I last did the event 1985-1989 so paths may now have changed and now be well worn in. I'm doing the event this year and will be popping over Fleet Moss to take a look when my damaged ankle sorts itself out, and a look at the night sections over Buckden and Gt Whernside.

Each competitor has to carry OS Explorer OL2 and OL30 OR Harvey Outdoor Maps Dales West & South; the route therefore doesn't fit on one map.

Whilst I can see what you are saying Roger i.e know the route well. on that section and esp at night if you don't have your map in your hand you will be in trouble. The reason most people get lost is complacency, you should be ticking off the features as you go so you know exactly where you are. Waiting until you are unsure is the wrong time to get the map out.it's already too late.

Point taken and perhaps this is a better answer than my alarmist response to the original question about maps. However night navigation with a map is tricky so it's best to know the route or hopefully someone in the group knows the way. I've been lost twice and on both occasions it was a miserable experience!

This time I'll be taking a GPS

Stolly I'm sure the route fits on OS 98, will check tonight.

The rules require the maps I said though; presumably OS 98 is too small a scale?

As for night navigation on the fellsman; it depends really on where you've got to by nightfall. If its Buckden Pike and Great Whernside, I'd say its quite easy with the only difficult bit being to travel by compass bearing from the GW trig checkpoint until you hit the fence.

    Rules:
Maps. EITHER Ordnance Survey OS Explorer OL2 and OL30 OR Harvey Outdoor Maps Dales West & South. Details of older maps are available on the website.

    Website:
    http://www.fellsman.org.uk/doku.php?id=faq:maps

The following map combinations are acceptable:
    • Ordnance Survey Landranger sheet 98

Hmm. If a maps's missing from the list does it mean it's not allowed?
I was going to take my BMC/Harveys mountain map, plus one of the old green 1:25K maps to cover the bit that's missing (Gragareth)

if I was still going to do this - which I probably won't be - I was going to question the 'having to carry the actual map' rule.

Does this extend to waterproofed high-quality colour photocopies - or likewise print-offs from online mapping?

I'd suggest the latter are a superior option to the actual map - cos for one, if I had to mess around with a folded OS map and a bloody mapcase in a howling gale, I'd never look at the damned thing.

(sorry if this has already been asked ....)
