Well I'm firmly in the DT camp on this; if I'd chosen not to run because of the odd twisted ankle, pulled calf and jarred knee in the past two years, I reckon I'd have been running for about a day and a half

    My rule of thumb is....

If it hurts too much to run on it, don't run

If it doesn't hurt too much, do

Sharp stabbing pain is usually a no-no but dull aches or calf strains are fine

Definitely agree about the bad ITB... there's no running through it.

Even if you could physically push on when it flares up (pretty much impossible in my experience as the pain is such that I kind of involuntarily collapse as I can't bear any weight on it!), it'd be a million(ish) times worse the next time you tried to run on it.

    I don't like having a dodgy ITB.

    Re: Pain means stop

Sorry guys I totally disagree with this "Stop being soft and get on with it" approach

After reading this thread I felt slightly inspired. I have been doing 15minute runs and building the knee back up slowly. I just went out for a 20 minute run on flat grass.

First 5 minutes a stabbing pain in knee about every minute "Stop being soft keep going" I told myself

10 - 15minutes A pain every 20 seconds "Stop being soft keep going" I told myself

Last 5 minutes stabbing pain in knee every step. "Forget it"

It aint happening for me, this aint being soft and it certainly would not handle any downhills in a fell race.

Its been two and a half years, 5 physios, orthotics and a heck of a lot of strenthening, stretching and frustration.

I used to live and breathe fell running I really did. Hence my determination to get back.

I know injuries I can run through I ran on painful ankles all the time, they loosen up.

Time for a scan me thinks probably two years too late.

So my two penneth for what its worth is "not everyone can just crack on through the pain".

    Cheers
    Jamie

Sorry to hear that Jamie. I'm seriously considering accupuncture. You looked at this?

    Scan first pal,
It wont do any harm to get a nhs scan.

Im probably seeing the best of the 5 physios I have seen. He reckons I need to sort my core stability out which could take months.

My last post sounded really angry, thats not the case.

    Cheers

Hey Jamie, try a bit of DIY massaging it's working for me to cirtain extents.

Sit on a chair with the bad leg off the edge and feel for the bone in the side of your leg with your fingertips side by side, you'll feel the muscle mass above your fingers and the tips will sort of be in a groove. Massage your fingertips up and down in a vertical motion so you feel the muscle mass 'popping' over the tips of your fingers and the bone. If you've got it right it'll hurt but keep kneading away, two or three short sessions a day and see how it goes, i'm feeling a bit better after 4 days.

My physio said the same. I'm doing Pilates to help with this.

Jamie, I certainly didn't mean to sound blase about serious injury. I'm lucky enough not to have one!

There are lots of levels and types of pain and injury, and I guess it's knowing what will deteriorate and what you can run through.

I just know for myself that as I have a massive lazy streak, it's tempting for me to go 'ah twinge in the old knee there, I'll not go out today, I might go to the pub instead ...' and I have to fight that. I've not got some massively high pain threshold either (I wish it was higher!) but I try to ignore the sciatic pain I get because frankly I don't think a great deal can be done about it.

There are obviously injuries that no one could or should try to run through, and I wish you a quick and successful recovery mate.

    Absolutely no offence taken pal,

This injury is just bugging me now, I just had a rant yesterday after a not very successful 20minute run.

    Cheers
