Men.

For men do lie you know it's so,
With subtle enchantment that drains your heart,
Hark another suitor approaches,
Verily he may be the one,
Show him the light that shineth within your breast,
Be not fearsome of the serpents tongue,
The filthy beast doth try and bind you,
With his silver tongue,
Alas you part into the ether,
Saddened by man and his deceit.

Tis the truth my friend
but hearts can mend
when hope seems lost
and sadness the cost
along comes one
who's lies are none
who fears that you
are a liar too
together you find
that the world can be kind
there's one last chance
to dance the dance
to see the light
and put to right
all that was wrong
in your life's long song
and hope is found
on tentative gound.

Wow this is something else. I love it.

I almost didn't read it as I'm struggling to keep on the up side and try and avoid the darker poetry.

Pandora’s Box

My ribs were a cage
for carrion crows
the blue-black scavengers
who, once trapped,
amused themselves by pecking
at the vestige of my heart.
Then unexpected, uninvited
there you were
and I lay down before you,
naked and shivering.
With trembling hands,
you cracked my chest
whilst I cowered and bled,
afraid of what you might find.
How bravely you caught them,
those fearsome birds,
And held each one close
whispering a charm,
a gentle spell,
to soothe ruffled feathers
and slow wilful minds.
One by one
you offered them
for my examination
before raising each to the sky.
You sent them away
on wild beating wings
and, as I watched,
I saw the mid-day sun
pierce their tattered feathers
and knew that what they left me
was hope.

Love, we're going home now,
Where the vines clamber over the trellis:
Even before you, the summer will arrive,
On its honeysuckle feet, in your bedroom.

Our nomadic kisses wandered over all the world:
Armenia, dollop of disinterred honey:
Ceylon, green dove: and the YangTse with its old
Old patience, dividing the day from the night.

And now, dearest, we return, across the crackling sea
Like two blind birds to their wall,
To their nest in a distant spring:

Because love cannot always fly without resting,
Our lives return to the wall, to the rocks of the sea:

Great Response Hes. How about at sometime in the future have a duelling poets stand off like the rappers used to in old school days and all the other poets decide who wins. All for fun of course.

Gifts

I brought gifts, a dream,
above the edge of an escarpement,
unfathomable drop,
I felt the fear and the desire to fall.

Another dream, my naked torso,
huge cavernous omission where a stomach should have been,
the wind howling through.
After that I saw holes everywhere, and the drop,
some kind of pleasant vertigo followed.

At the theatre I gazed at the distance
between my seat and the stage
dizzied with the prospect of some magical falling,
not conceiving of decking out,
the unconscious illogical harness of certainty
held my risk taking mind.

Eventually the delectable fear of falling
could be resisted no longer,
and an unsuspecting catalyst
luminous hood in november rain,
unsure of the descent,
we peeled away, without realising
at each carapace.

And so began the journey,
crashing and banging
down a huge bamboo shoot
of possibilities,
I landed with a bump into uncertainty.
The chockstone unlodged, it got ugly,
I think...
I got ugly.
I wasn’t expecting that.

But now, after the machinations,
I catch glimpses,
here is the centre of myself,
a stillness forgotten.

Tonight my mother found some poems
written for her when I was a child
“you were always writing poems”,
I had forgotten completely,
it was a relief to remember.
