It is perhaps noteworthy that the 459 finishers in the 2007 PPP is the highest ever.
In the early 1990s typically 400+ finished, eg

96 415
97 427
However with the exception of 2000 when the race was an English Champ counter (409) by the late 1990s the race appeared to be in serious decline:

2004 saw the hooplah of the 50th Anniversary Race, Championship status etc and 407 finished.
Conventional wisdom then on the organising committee was that after 2004 numbers would continue to decline, but instead the race has regained and now surpassed its previous popularity:

2007 459
And rightly so?
