Tammy was anywhere between 16 and 18, I don't think its dawned on Minty our other dog yet as Tammy was blind and senile (though very active) in her last months and she will most likely enjoy the not being walked into, jumped on etc for a while till she realises Tammy won't be back.

Thanks for your sympathies please accept them back.

Your pup has no proven Work or Showing abilities i guess, so why breed? Well cos you think it's a good way of making a bit of cash. Far too many dogs in rescue centres because of people like you. "Breeders" have a waiting list for their pups with homes lined up before the pups are even born. Makes me so mad!
Personally I'd never buy from a breeder. All my dogs have been rescue dogs. We had 7 pups from one (pregnant when we got her), we asked for a £50 donation, but I'd have a scallie mongrel collie over a pure bred anyday. I know what the longevity data shows..

Look at the KC. Come on don't play the breeders care card, some do many don't. Many care about appearances - not health. Hence dogs which yelp due to a brain too large for their skull, dogs with ear problems, hip problems..

Spot on. Love collie's but they are a huge commitment. Ours really do impact on everything we do. Love them to bits, but they do make life complex and you often have to change your life to cope.

think you should all take a breath and preach else where..

    Thanks
Not sure you can justify £300 for a collie, but fair enough. We asked for £50. She was tied up pregnant. We took her in from the rescue centre and adopted out ourselves. Not nice experience. But we asked for £50 so we knew people would at least think about it. Even for that I got abuse from the one of the admi people on a dog forum for profiteering from my dogs. We recieved £300 quid and brought up 7 pups to 8-10 weeks, vets bills, kenneling, bedding, food, there's no chance we even broke even.

We sometimes leave hours for up to 6 hrs. But rarely, the wife works from home, and we leave them when they've been out and get taken out afterwards. For ours 2 x half hour runs a day and you'd think we'd beaten them. They have high standards and expect every day to be a 2 hr fell run, but only when its not raining. The other day one of them ran off and hid when she saw me putting my fell shoes on..

I think what LD is saying is that those who do deliberately breed contribute. She makes a valid point. Its hard, we've had some fantastic dogs over the years who I'd loved to have bred from, so understand the urge, but as rescue mongrels we never have a clue if they'd be anything like the dog we had. When our 'collie' had pups, they came out as everything from alsations to collies to lurcher like things..

Obviously thats just a steriotypical view but it worried me so nodoubt it worries others. .
That's what I love about rescue dogs. They are crazy individuals, often totally screwed up. But so what. The main thing is to let them feel happy and confident ish, ours are manic anxious collie ish dogs.

Also, sorry to hear about the losses of your oldies BB and Anti.. am facing same thing with one of mine soon

Can i just reiterate that, although its always good to hear stories of really messed up dogs being rehomed and retrained, it can sometimes obscure that fact that these are the minority, interesting cases. The majority of dogs up for rehoming have no issues, or very transient ones. There isn't a discrete population of dogs known as rescue dogs. There's just dogs, behaving in a dog-like way, in response to situations which, as i think JohnK made the crucial point above, are not situations which are good for dogs, or easy for dogs to cope with. Most human lifestyles could have been designed with the purpose of creating canine behaviour problems. I marvel constantly at just how amazingly adaptable domestic dogs can be in the face of what is totally inappropriate for the species. I don't use the word unnatural for the species, because these are not animals which are the result of natural selection, but centuries of genetic manipulation- result being some hideous monstrosities which are diseases on legs.

Oh dear... 8am and i'm geared up for another day of ranting.
