I only think we have a right to know what politicians are up to if it's something that directly relates to the job they're supposed to be doing.... where or with whom they're playing hide the sausage, as long as it's legal, is no-ones business but their own.

I think Rooney should behave. He is looked up by kids and adults all around the world (Manchester United is a huge global brand) and it's not unreasonable for his employers to expect him to keep his tabloid appearances to the back of the paper imho. Employees are obliged to prevent their employer's reputations from being sullied but the 'value' of premier league players (especially strikers) mean they can get away with behaviour that would be deemed unacceptable for many professional workers in the regular world

As for Hague I cannot make my mind up whether he's gay, arrogant or naive. The problem for politicians is putting themselves in a position where they could be blackmailed as I think Noel or someone else posted earlier. He has dreadful dress-sense that is for sure!

derby, you are right about mr rooney. as everyone on this forum knows i am the biggest man united fan but i have now reached a point where i don't give a toss about football and footballers. before, when i used to go (78-84) before money came into the game it was great. i know they could be tossers then but something has changed and it is just not football but society in general. i no longer understand it and it amazes me, i am probably like my grandma when i was a punk and playing such records as, the dead kennedys and the sex pistols, she thought the whole world was coming to an end.

That's different as it has a direct relation to the job they're doing if that's their portfolio. As far as I know the construction and implementation of foreign policy have very little to do with sexuality.

There's rich pickings in football all round. Extremely highly paid, athletic blokes holed up in hotels miles from home with evenings to spare. A constant stream of girls hoping to score and a press pack lying in wait. Surprising it doesn't happen more often.
Coleen Rooney would survive on her own, I'm sure, she seems very capable.

Problem here is that there is a direct conflict between judging Rooney the footballer and Rooney the UK citizen. A conflict between a talented footballer and a morally flawed young man. I know I would be just as discused to hear the bloke down the road or my colleague at work had done the same.

I wonder why people make the point about role models and the fact that Roonie is a poor one - I'd say that a sports superstar being humbled, being found not to be as bulletproof as he clearly thought he was and being made to face up to his own arrogance is a perfect lesson in life for kids. My younger daughter (15) follows super league really closely and considers all footballers wusses anyway but even she realises what a prat Rooney has been. I over heard her talking to two friends the other day and some of the stuff they were coming up with were really quite profound

I think you're looking at this with huge whomping great rose tinted spectacles. Footballers in the 70's and 80's were awful - huge amounts of drinking going on, gambling, brown paper bags, behind the scenes wheeling and dealing. And the football was nothing like it is now. Footballers can be considered athletes nowadays where as I'm not sure that was the case then.

Oh and another thing. Its a statistical certainty that if you take any group of 25 lads together, like the squad of a football team for instance (or even the first 25 fell runners to turn up for a race), that a handful of them will have some skeletons in their cupboards. Professional footballers though offer wide open goals to the tabloids for this kind of crap.

And never mind William Hague but I can own up here and now to sharing a room in Keswick last Christmas with half a dozen fell runners, each and everyone of them male
