i only hope the other mountain marathons allow solo entries in future, i personally find that much more fun

Yes, my partner and her replacement-for-me chose that one as well, it finished them off rather.

I'd have been tempted (from the comfort of an armchair) by the 40/40/50 pointers in the bottom left corner, I wonder if anyone else went that way?

Partner and I went that way, got the 50 pointer and guess what??? Got timed out grrrrrrr. Reading here and looking at the results I am absolutely amazed at how well people did. We seem to be hammering it on day 1 but would only have got 175 if we had got back in time. Just goes to show how much is down to route choice I suppose. What is the general strategy from the off on these events? Is it a case of counting up possible routes and sticking to it, or reassessing the whole time? Do people go for the far corners, where the big points are before returning and picking up as much as possible.

As my first MM I felt it was a bit of a failure really. Despite this it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and will be back for more.

I'm curious as to people's route choices on day 2. I was 3rd Vet after day 1 with 235, so I went for it on day 2 - going over Angle Tarn and Hayeswater to the big 40 pointers on Gray Crag and Blea Tarn, with one final push to the 30 above the Eagle OOB. Finished with 4 mins to go, but only 170 pts - ended up 4th Vet by a few points. Pushed it much harder on day 2, so presume a more northerly sweep of the CPs was the more productive?? My 3rd time on the RAB - for me the best and most enjoyable event on the calendar (the weather helps!!).

We took it a little easier on day 2, finished about 15 mins early with 160 points. If we pushed harder I guess we could have got the 25 pointer overlooking Ullswater & the one to the East of that on the fell/forest boundary.

Cracking event as always... the weather definitely helps!

IMHO try and plan a route where you can reassess. We headed to the controls to the South of Haweswater. After the Branstree control we had lots of options depending on how we were doing for time. Try and minimise any 'dead' running where you're covering a long distance without picking up points. There's usually controls near the finish which you can hoover up if you've plenty of time remaining.

My first MM of any kind! Supposed to be a duo, but my partner injured his knee so went solo because he'd be slow downhill. He still beat me both days...

Made some comedy errors - I walked straight past checkpoint 118 (15pts), because I'd folded my map over the number and thought it was 108, so read the wrong description. Should have gone back for it when I realised! Then Hayeswater, Hartsop Dodd, Brock Crags, and Redgate Gill. Had to skip Beda Fell because I was running late, and came in for 183pts in the end. I reckon the 50 pointer on Ullswater was a better bet than Hartsop Dodd - it only took me 45 minutes up and down, but that's worth a lot of ground on the flat....

Second day was a disaster, mostly because of route planning - Angle Tarn (why didn't I do Beda Fell first?) then Gray Crag, but failed to notice that Hayeswater was practically free. Went a km too far south coming of Gray Crag (mist) got down to the saddle above Kentmere Common before realising where I was. Plodded over High Street, up to Rampsgill, came back down Measand Beck. Picked up the points I missed the previous day, and had to get Four Stones anyway to get back to the finish. Runningly seriously late so sprinted back from there and made it to the finish with 25 seconds spare. Sorry to the girl I splashed in the final puddle! Covered about 28km with just 90pts to show for it... Just about any route would have been better than that one.

Finally - I picked up a Nevis Sport neck tube on the path from the mid-camp up to Angletarn. Not much use to me, so let me know if you lost one!

Something like that anyway.

Thanks for that. I just didn't have the time to pick off the 3x10 pointers near the finish, which was probably the reason for the lower score (only got one after a pelt down Haweswater!).

me too, no chance of getting cold as you can put a 4 season S/bag and beer in your overnight bag.
