Well at a guess...i'd say that crossing your chain is when its travelling round at an angle...rather than straight...
I tend to have a look down when im going along to check every one in while...can get dangerous so really I should learn who to avoid it...shouldnt I dazington!
err yes you should stick to keeping your chain central on the cassette as possible. The reason that you throw a chain is generally because your in say a 19/23 sprocket on the big ring and you then come to a hill or rise and you throw it from the 53 chainring to the 39.
Because the chain at the rear is over to the left( ie into the wheel) . The chain then gets thrown past the 39 ring and bang it comes off.
Id bet diamonds our Emma was just about to start a climb.
Everyone does it.
You should ensure you are in the correct gear at the base of the climb instead of doing what Sclechk did on the tour.
AL we have talked about chain maintenence before?.
Basically if your chain starts to wear ( not stretch as some people believe) , it will rapidly then wear your rear cassete out. You will then find that your most commonly used sprockets, the chain will automatically start jumping up and down and generally not behave as it should.
This is because the chain is moving around too much on teeth on the sprocket.
So replace your chain before you knacker your cassette. The more you cross your chain the more wear it will add to both it and the sprockets.
Dont get into the habit of thinking you can ride everywhere in the 53 ring as some bikies do. Not good.
Lots of people make the mistake of thinking that when the gears start jumping etc, it needs servicing. They then take the bike into there LBS and low and behold ( yes the gear cable may need tightening but also the chain and cassette needs changing) Ask any bike shop owner and they make easy money from this.

OOh everyone out today by the looks of things. Mostly fine down here apart from a shower on the way home and a rather blustery wind, yup, head wind all the way home! So 55 miles this afternoon, over to the jewel of the valleys, Abergwynfi, don't stop or wheels will get nicked! Used to be a big old pub there last time I looked, its gone now, reckon the locals nicked that as well! 2 climbs of the Bwlch for my sins, 1,000 metres climbing or so for the trip and a puncture, doh, about half a mile from home, so lobbed the bike on my shoulder and practiced for the three PX rather than sit by the road and sort it. Tried out some DT Swiss wheels, very impressive, I want, I want!!!
And confession time, first outing with a new chain....
and cassette, because I had not listened to Daz and worn it out, sorryDaz
Erm, Emms, as we are sharing the naughty step, any chance of some cake next May, we will be passing your way on a bit of an end to end jaunt sort of thing........?????
I will of course promise to Daz to be a bit more careful with my drive-train![]()
I knackered a chain too, and a blade... of my chainsaw...By using it while the chain was knackered
Cost me almost £50
