What about all the athletes who attempted to carry out such training and ended up giving up when it didn't work? To evaluate Lydiard's system we need to consider them. As to the athletes who did achieve, they'd have run much better with less training. Even Lydiard admitted such when he changed his schedules in 1978.

Peter Snell had a V02 of 72 in 1962. Not very impressive when you consider he was running 155miles a week during the winter. Barry magee had a best of 2.17 for the marathon. Not bad, but was it really that good when you consider he was running 200 miles per week?

You could equally say, 1:44 for 800m on grass wasn't a bad time for an athlete with a VO2 max of only 72. Not a good argument for the use of such scientific testing as a barometer for identifying talent! Barry Magee only running 2:17? No comment. Except that he'd still be nigh on No 1 in Britain at the moment!

Perhaps Lydiard did overdo his advocation of mileage, although I still regard it as the best system if applied correctly. If. So how did he change his schedules in 1978? You're clearly more read than me, I'm genuinely interested.
