    Re: UTMB etc 2011

I've got my place for the 2011 UTMB based on my not getting a place for 2010, though qualifying. Very pleased, considering I thought that, with the cancelled/seriously revised race in 2010, it may mean 2010 racers being offered a guaranteed place for 2011. I was wrong.

Don't forget the GRP as an alternative if you don't get your UTMB place. Promise it will put hairs on your chest. Awesome race nestled in the more subtle Pyrenees with an almost identical length and height gain as the UTMB. Narrower, rockier tracks, however (I am told by those who have done both) and many less runners, so more lonely during night stage. Hasn't been over-subscribed so far, but wouldn't be surprized if it becomes so this year for the first time - the word is catching on. Also, no qualifying races needed.
    All the best

The details of 2010 Bob Graham Club completions have been supplied to the UTMB organisers today.

Michel Poletti mentioned to me that there were 15 or 16 entries from those specifying the BG as a qualifying event.

Best of luck tous le monde in the lottery.

And Michel said he would see me in Chamonix in August for the CCC.

Has he just picked my name out?

    I hope so!

    Re: UTMB etc 2011

A few thoughts now that last year's CCC experience has been fully absorbed. Excuse the ramblings!

    1. Despite the difficulties in 2010 I still believe that these are a brilliant set of ultra races, amongst the best in the world.
    2. The atmosphere is unbelieveable and I can't wait to experience this again in 2011; with better weather this should be many times better than in 2010.
    3. I plan to be nearer the front of the pack at start time. I lingered at the back to soak up the atmosphere and that affected the run out to Bertone. Too much traffic which didn't hold me up too badly, but interrupted rhythm and just gave some mental strain that would be good to lose.
    4. Having experienced the "catering" I am better placed to deal with this aspect. I carried too much food and can cut down on what I carry. I ate plenty of the local stuff and the ramen noodle soup was fab. The key is to deal with the first foodless (in terms of race support) 32 kms to Arnuva, where you can stock up.
    5. I am going to ditch the water bladder and go with 2 front-mounted bottles. I prefer these now. Because they are right in my face, they "make" me drink. Easier to fill too.
    6. Unlike a BG where most of us go supported, it is important to be very comfortable with your own company because you can spend long spells without too much interaction, especially at night, if you aren't a speedster. I did most of my training solo, and this paid dividends in terms of being in the right frame of mind on race day. I need to do this again.

    Onwards and upwards.
