Is that a band, a perversion, or the start of a lucrative career in human trafficking?

Disk space is cheap these days. Keep one copy on your hard drive. Keep another copy on another hard drive. Keep a third copy on a removable hard drive, and keep that one hidden in the garage, or at somebody else's house, updating it every few weeks or months. Don't trust any copying/backup software to get it right either. Copy it yourself by hand from Windows Explorer or your Apple equivalent. That way your music is reasonably safe from hardware failure, fire and theft. It's not really very hard to do, & doesn't cost that much.
Safest and best way is to buy a hard copy from an independent retailer. We need to keep these stores alive!

Yes, that would have been sensible. At least I haven't lost everything though, as I have an old-fashioned attitude which means that I try to keep up with burning everything to CD, as a precaution. I'm about 3 months behind with this, but all the stuff I've acquired since then lived in a playlist called 'unburnt', which I always keep on my iPod.
This means that with luck I can transfer back a chunk of stuff; it should be transferring at this very moment. Via the CD collection, most of the rest of my smouldering iTunes Library is still available to me if I choose to re-stock with it. However, it'd take me an age to find something I wanted, and copying back in and making playlists, adding artwork etc would/will be a major undertaking.
And yes - phew - I DID remember to disable automatic sync before plugging in my iPod....
