From following Splatcher's directions it sounds like roughly half the distance is the circuit from Patterdale and the other half the out and back from Askham to Patterdale... does this seem about right? I think I'm going to have a recce of Askham to Patterdale and back tomorrow.

Tracklogs says the Askham-Patterdale section is a smidge over 10 miles (one way).

    Hank

I think the route to Patterdale is quite straightforward but if you could provide a route map when you have done the recce that would be very helpful

    Enjoy your day out!

    Cheers

No worries... I'll do a GPS track and stick a link up.

Can you not do the whole route and let us have a GPS track of that!

Oh, if only I'd seen your message then I would have! Or maybe not. Anyway, here's the track. Probably not a right lot of use as the maps on Garmin Connect are rubbish. It was a nice run though. A few bits of road that weren't good in Mudclaws, but other than that I enjoyed it. Navigationally very straight-forward, other than a small section early on that could be tricky under snow. But nothing a compass bearing wouldn't sort out. Some of the paths could be interesting if it's icy as they're very wet. The out and back makes up 32k of the total 61, so pretty much half.

It had better be icy - I've just ordered a pair of Kahtoolas!

I just hope it's clear one way or another... I don't want to carry them round and not use them, but then I don't want to leave them only to find there's ice around.

Recced the loop from Patterdale today... I make it pretty much 28k with about 1100m climb, making 60k and about 2000m for the whole thing. The climb up to Grisedale Tarn from Dunmail would be interesting under snow and ice.
