Gritstone Any Time Challenge

Had a crack at this today, a bit wet in some places but for November it doesnt get much better than it was today. Managed to get round in 3hrs 29mins so a pleasing run out. The last long climb out of the Goyt Vallley was tough for me. Think I need to come out with you Dale to have a look at the lines you take sometime. :w00t:

Excellent run that, Ant ( never as easy in winter). I will need to get fit before we go round together. Early next year it will make for an excellent training route in preperation for the 50/100. ( 2 laps for me ha ha )

ps start and finish at Goldstich and getting the road bit done on fresh legs seemed to help me.

Went round the 6 Trigs in 6:22. Not as fast as I'd have liked, but about what I expected I suppose. It was a glorious day though, and I can't remember the last time I got sunburnt in November. No sign of Dorian Grey on my way round: I must have blinked & missed him.

I dont do early starts if I can help it, ha. So I didnt start trotting from the Cat & Fiddle until 10:15am. But that seemed to work well as it give time for the mist around Flash to burn off. I kept on the road all the way until the U turn of the main road that leads you over the cattle grid back to C&F and then took a beeline for the Axe Edge trig. Not sure if that was a bad idea or a good idea, it seemed to work ok. I like your idea of getting the road done first Dale. Yeah we will book a run in then for next year. As you said good training for the Lakeland series....and yes defo 2 laps for you! ha
Splits were 31:40 Shuttlingsloe, then 49:57 to Roaches, 57:26 to Axe Edge, 22:47 to Burbage, 37:11 to Shinning Tor (3hrs 19mins running time at this point), then the 10minute run in.

I left the Cat & Fiddle at about 8:20, & took the scenic options. For the record: Shutlingsloe 40:43, Roaches 1:47, Merryton Low 3:12, Axe Edge 4:46, Burbage Edge 5:16, Shining Tor 6:06, C&F 6:22. From the Roaches I went between Hen Cloud & Ramshaw Rocks, via Well Farm, Naychurch, Swainsmoor. Some time lost for routefinding here as it was misty & the paths not obvious, but it avoided some road running. Good for running though in the main, so this bit should be faster next time. I avoided running on the A53, going north via Gib Tor farm, Flash Bottom, Flash, Oliver Hill & the path to the west of the south bit of Axe Edge.

if you do it clockwise from C&F, the road section (Flash to Goldsitch) acts as a kind of "interval" to the route, is mostly downhill and doesn't seem so much of a chore

Ha, very good point Daz. I never even thought about going clockwise! I will have to give it a try; it would be interesting to see how the splits differ.

Records show that Clockwise is the slower option. Ive gone both ways several times and it took longer Clockwise.

I think its all to do with climbing shuttlingsloe on tired legs... be interested to here if any one knows different.

Excellent run on the six trigs by splacher. I must have another go next year

Give me a shout when you are thinking of going in the new year. struggling a bit with a hamstring at moment so need to ease back. Bye the way I went round the Calton Fell race route last Sunday and the fog never burnt back. Infact it was so dense at times that I couldnt find Soles Hill! had to miss it out and go straight back to Calton. Good navigation skills eh!!

Had my eye on doing this all year. Went round last Saturday as replecement for cancelled Tankys. Went clockwise in cold and windy conditions with a few showers thrown in for good measure in the first couple of hours. Finished in 4:57, quite happy given the conditions and the fact that I took the scenic option from Axe Edge to the Roaches and went via 3 Shires Head and Gradbach!! Last 2 climbs up Shutlingsloe and up to the C&F were hard work. Enjoyed the route and may well come back in the spring for an anti-clockwise round, probably still keep the scenic bits in though.
