    Re: Today's poet

Was wondering what the manifesto thread was and made the mistake of taking a look...oh my goodness, how depressing! Anyway, I can't believe we just missed each other Mossy. I got to the top of Whernside at just before 12.00! Hope to run into you (not literally, although that's possible considering how clumsy I am:wink: ) another time.

Hey! Must have just missed you last weekend Hes. Ran up from Dent onto Whernisde with a mate, got to the trig at about 11:00 ish - and then headed back down. Well done on your run.

Oooo exciting stuff! I wonder if he'll include Floyd shagging his leg and me falling at his feet in a bog (probably not!). I ended up eating that mars bar blagged off of him...the sacrilege!

Not sure Mossy? I thought they were her lines with the quotes used for some poetic construct rather than a direct quote ?
The 'Nine' threw me for a bit though before I realised it referred to the Nine Muses !

    Re: Today's poet

I got a great anthology of poems for Xmas and came across this belter last night. A bit grim, but very effective:

    Pigs - Les Murray

Us all sore cement was we.
Not warmed then with glares. Not glutting mush
under that pole the lightning's tied to.
No farrow-shit in milk to make us randy.
Us back in cool god-shit. We ate crisp.
We nosed up good rank in the tunnelled bush.
Us all ****ers then. And Big, huh? Tusked
the balls-biting dog and gutsed him wet.
Us shoved down the soft cement of rivers.
Us snored the earth hollow, filled farrow, grunted.
Never stopped growing. We sloughed, we soughed
and balked no weird till the high ridgebacks was us
with weight-buried hooves. Or bristly, with milk.
Us never knowed like slitting nor hose-biff then.
Nor the terrible sheet-cutting screams up ahead.
The burnt water kicking. This gone-already feeling
here in no place with our heads on upside down.

    And an 'academic' perpective here:

"contemplative, moving and droll" - is that 3 of the 4 runners who went to meet him? Or maybe that is the bit about you falling at his feet? or maybe his brief romance with Floyd?

I can't believe you ate the the Mars bar. That would be worth a fortune when he becomes poet laureate! ;-)

I'd forgotten about Floyd's welcome! It'll be a laugh reading his book I'm sure.

    Re: Today's poet

    vanquished by the sun
    winter waits in the shadows
    to return at dusk

about the only thing I've written lately and inspired by the frost pockets on the way to Hawes on Saturday.
