I walked the route yesterday (Friday) and the conditions underfoot where terrible. The worst section was probably the Woolpacks. I'm not doing the race but have done it before many times. I used it as a training walk for the Paddy Buckley
isn't the racing line through the woolpacks?
also how difficult is route finding over brown knoll? i'm striking a funny balance between trepidation and excitement at the minute! 4 weeks to go!
When Karl and I recced it on Saturday, I didn't think it was too bad for the most part. Although I'd agree that the Woolpacks weren't great (one walker had managed to get stuck and was being pulled out by his friends as we went past...)
There's a cut-through that goes behind them that's supposed to be quicker, although I've still never managed to find it properly yet...
I didn't find it too bad in the clear, but if visibility's low it can be a bit iffy. I'd definitely recommended going for a recce of it if you can. And I'm similarly ambivalent!also how difficult is route finding over brown knoll? i'm striking a funny balance between trepidation and excitement at the minute! 4 weeks to go!
i'd be out there now only we've a 3 week old son who is putting paid to most things! i'm just looking forward to a nice trot round on the day.
Unfortunately I will not be able to take up my place in this year's Edale Skyline and don't want to transfer it for a place in next year's race, so I am offering it to the first FRA forum member who gets in touch with me. Ian has provided details of the the substitution process here: http://www.dpfr.org.uk/pages/3
Obviously, apart from my emailing the RO you will have to meet the race entry criteria and submit an entry form along with the five quid substitution fee.
Hope this makes someone's day .....

The safe way is through the Woolpacks. There is a more direct line immediately after Pym Chair. It is worth a recce. It took me a recce and an initial race before I had it right. If you play safe and err slightly right (as I did twice) you end up on the wrong side of the stream and have to double back, if you err to the left you end up on the dark side of the moon on Kinder Scout.
On the 25000 map draw a line from right shoulder of Pym Chair to the point of the < by the ford, aim to be on the north bank as you approach the ford (and therefore don't have to use it). If the clag is down and you're not sure, play safe.
