So I'm determined to find alternative routes this time and the "Semi-Halls"/"Hanks Variant" seems like a good option.
On a dark night in thick clag... probably not actually!

The traverse line isn't too hard to find when you can see where you're aiming for (personally I tend to bash further on down the big scree/soil slope before cutting across hard left, rather than taking the grassy spurs per Hank's description).

But in poor vis conditions it'd be a disorientating patch of hillside with a high risk of getting badly stuck on steep ground. You'd want to be *very* sure of your knowledge of the line to go that way... I'd take one of the ridges for sure.

Yeah, I was being a bit tongue in cheek earlier  I've been down most variants of Halls many times in many weathers and it can and does get tricky (I had similar conditions to yourself on my round and actually fell quite a few feet in the dark). The variant talked about on here is one i've used for years and the one i prefer in wet conditions.

in poor vis I would need a reliable navigator (like Ken ) to take me down the Semi-Halls

if I was nav-ing myself I'd go down Doddick - there's only the one spot where you can go wrong and I have that firmly fixed in my "micro-nav" memory (famous last words!)

I find the "Semi-Halls" the fastest way down.

Doddick the easiest on the legs.

But in bad weather in summer the parachute is the most reliable way to get down with out losing time

base jumping is a "reliable" way of getting down off a cliff, but you won't find me doing it

None taken, I just messed it up on the recce which influenced my thinking at the time.

Agreed, and if the conditions are anything like my previous attempt I'll be taking Doddick.

Nee bother, Nee Bother, I wasn't being defensive or anything.
I'm fine moving up the scrambly stuff at the top of Halls, just not so quick going down, so I'll be using the "semi-Halls" if visibility is good.

Weather's looking, to put it bluntly, a bit shit for Friday, so I may well find out how the "semi-Halls" is in wind/rain/clag/dark! If it's truly awful I'll do Doddick I think... so long as you pick up the start it's pretty easy going. As has been mentioned previously, Hall's/semi/Parachute are prone to difficulty if the optimum line is lost in bad conditions.

Good luck with it Hank. The forecast might be wrong anyway - it was last Saturday.

Thanks. And, yes, the forecast could well be wrong and there's still time for it to change, but the low out in the Atlantic means things will be mixed at best. Still, like Ken says (nice to meet you too - again!), got to stay positive and deal with whatever the day throws up.

On the plus side, it's a good excuse to invest in some hefty Goretex gloves! I always eat less in the wind and rain as it tends to involve faffing in big gloves and/or wet, cold hands. Need to be suitably attired to eat like a pig.
