I agree with Bob - I did it a few years ago and off White Pike when your on your last legs could be worth checking out as well as the final descent off Caw, where I ended up running down a section that led to a 8ft drop - clearly I didn't take the best line.

Cheers everyone, your advice is much appreciated, especially towards the end of the race. If there is anyone else with any further local knowledge I would be keen to hear.

Were there ever so many lost souls?
I came across a competitor from the so-called Short Duddon, who desperately asked where Caw was. He said that he had been looking for it for ages. The results suggest that there were some 'wanderings'.

There was. I know of a few (5 I think) that descended too early off Little Stand and ended up on the road at the foot of Wrynose (West of Wrynose breast), also a guy that got within 100 meters of visiting Seathewaite tarn. At Swirl How CP a lot of people were setting off to descend down prison band until the marshals pointed out that they needed to go in almost the opposite direction. It was a day when many would have wished they had reccied it recently. There was a lot of grouping as well; very few runners were confident enough to run on their own. Even the first 4 were together going up wet side edge.

It was certainly interesting, not a great day for seeing the views. I assume there are some views, having not done the race before.

Didn't finish the race as the 3 of us running together were timed out at White Peak. We never really went too far wrong on the navigation, we just weren't fast enough on the ascents(I should say I wasn't fast enough, the other 2 kindly kept waiting for me). I had run the London Marathon and thought I would have enough from the training for that, but it doesn't compensate for getting out on the Fells and I had really done nothing since London. There's always next year I suppose.

I'm not overly surprised, London training would give you stamina but the hills would take that from you no problem. Flat running is not enough for long fell races. Also, London was ages ago so if you haven't done anything since your fitness levels would definitely have dropped a fair amount.

Nevermind, go back next year with some proper training and see how it goes then.

I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to all the marshalls yesterday. To be sat for hours at any of those check points must have been truly awful and very much appreciated.

My race was ok apart from ascending Green Pikes TWICE thinking it was Caw - Doh!

As one of the White Peak 3, I thought you were waiting for me.However it was great to run with you for a while.I would have quit at 3 shires stone had I been on my own.We were the last ones through some check points, I would like to thank the marshalls who waited in atrocious conditions (I think they were as glad to see us as we were them).I have never come up against weather like it during a race and ultimately it proved too much.Still as Half Man Half Sponge says there is always next year.

Just to echo what everyone here is saying- big thanks to the marshals who must have had a horrendous time of it in the weather. Went somewhat astray myself (3TIMES) and I've done this about 10 times so I think I might just run round it again before next year.
