I would go for grip over cushioning.

Racing flat... no chance.
Its a steep proper fell race, just a short section of road, but forget that. I've always worn walshes and would maybe go for x talons now just as I find them comfy. There is lots of very steep small scree and mud.
A massively knobbled quad bike tyre on each foot would fit the bill nicely on the descent!

cheers stagger will do, weve got a weeks hols on skye after the ben so hope to get some miles in up there too if the legs will allow?
Slip on mud or slip on wet rocky path? Roclites I think.
