Mark - I've done both routes from the start in previous years (yes and I still don't know where I'm going!) and there wasn't much in it for both of them as I got to the checkpoints at the same time. There are people to follow, but I did feel sheer panic when they all went different ways!!

Just follow George Matuszewski. His number is 1
He has run it 37 times, including a double run one year.:closed:

I believe he has never followed the same route twice!:w00t:

    Re: Bullock Smithy

My main problem is going to be Earl Sterndale to Brand Top, then Brand Top to Cumberland Cottage. Luckily last year I got paired with a very helpful couple (Plod Queen and her partner) who guided me thru' these sections in the dark. I've attempted to draw it up onto my map using the BS supplied route, but it is tricky. Hopefully at least some of this will be in the light, or half-light this year. If push comes to shove I'll follow the road thru' Hollinsclough I guess, then slightly double back to pick up Brand Top. Then its kind of road/track to Cumberland. Having put it all on my map, big chunks are coming back to me so hopefully I'll recognise large tracts. Certainly when we went up to recce last week I recognised big parts.

Iain - stick with me kid!
'course that means you'll have to bimble along at my pace
13:30 schedule should have it going dark on us somewhere between ES and BT
but I've recced this to destruction over the last 2 1/2 years, so nothing can go wrong :w00t:

    fell guy
from earl sterndal straight down road to crossroad, staright across up a slight hill on road till you come to footpath/track on left follow sign to you get to dowell dale. Up road for approx 1/2 mile left on footpath/track and then bear right follow path to farm with MyCOCKs cemet mixers . cross field over stile just before farm and across fields with apond on right x straem (right and then cross agin left. you should be at gate at bottom of hill very muddy with farm with barking dog follow track as is turns right at top and then all way to brand top.
    hope this makes sense

Plenty of food and drink at the checkpoints (none at Edale Cross). Apparently there are hot dogs somewhere near Brand Top...

So you won't starve but maybe take a few favourites for in between bits.

The checkpoint food is great! Fruit salad in rice pudding, oranges, soup, hot dogs, golden syrup cake, jam doughnuts, crisps - have to say the penguin biscuits made me heave last year and I have not eaten them since! I carried a large bottle which I kept refilling with water at each checkpoint. You have to take your own cup with you if you want a cup of tea/soup if I recall - I bought a collapsible cup which was very handy.

There is parking near the start however it feels like miles away when you have to walk back to the car after the finish!
