    Long distance races/permission

So when people organise races like the WHW.. Lakeland 50/100.. Dragons back et al.

    Do people get permission?

I've a route designed for a 50 mile trail race in Snowdonia, my plan would be to not mark it.. use punches.. and drop bags.. so low cost and low support.. 4 drop bags.. say limited to 50-100 people year 1 and get feedback and build.. it'd actually be fell/trail 50 miles, 3000m ascent.. no major nav but rough paths ans up to 1000m.. but all the hig sections are straight forwards.

All public footpaths.. under CRoW act you need permission but I wondered if people did for the ultra distance trail runs?

I think you need permission to run an event over private land, even if you, as an individual, have a right to be on it under the CRoW act. I seem to recall the Fellsman having exactly this problem, which led to a route change and also a date change.
Your best bet would be to get in touch with the organisers of such events and see if you can't benefit from thier experience.

Yes Iain you must get permission as you'll put other races at risk if you don't.

Club events where no money has changed hands you can get away with but if there's a large number of runners I'd still seek permission.
FRA has an access officer give him a bell.

YES! Always ask for permission, even if an event is run on public rights of way. There is a difference between how land owners treat types of events, so things that make a difference are: size of field and if it is a money making event or not...

Thanks.. I'll have a think then.. just finalised a new short race route.. only a short but 4 summits, a 3000er, 5.5 miles, 700m ascent. Hopefully we can hold that early next year as think there is only 1 maybe 2 landowners..

Ultra may be a longer term plan.. will speak to a few others and see how that can be done..

Whilst it probably doesn't affect the race you have in mind United Utilities ( and I suspect all other Utility companies ) are particularly keen on race organisers obtaining written permission. This includes completing their events form, a map of the route, risk assessment, proof of insurance and full event details. If the race involves crossing more than one of their sections of land this involves multiple permissions !

....and be prepared to pay them for the privilege of running over 'their' land. Even though it was stolen off the public under the guise of 'privatisation'.

I think Shane Ohly said he got permission from 200 landowners for the DB.

Iain, Interesting........ After attempting the Lakeland 100 earlier this year, I thought snowdonia could do with a good trail ultra race too - after the dragons back I had a look at the map and planned a rough route about 42 miles with 2800m ascent that circles the central part of snowdonia - wouldn't surprise me if its fairly similar to yours. When you're back from the states perhaps we could get together and compare notes?
