Daleyboy - I've also tended to use the paper ones whether for walking or running but have purchased a couple of Actives recently as replacement for well-used (meaning torn & muddied!) paper versions - so in the long run (deliberate pun!) I think they are worth it but its all personal choice.

As you say there are always bargains out there on eBay.

Actives are defo the way to go if you'll be using them many times. I do own un-laminated maps, but only for places I'm only likely to visit no more than once a year.
