Cabin in the Woods - Something a bit different (as usual) from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard. I don't usually like the gory horror films much apart from the ones with humour in them. This one had some humour in and a decent cast with some heavyweights like Bradley Whitford in it. There were some good one-liners in the film scattered amongst the Joss Whedon imagined monster action. Sigourney Weaver even put in a cameo appearance as well.

Graham I missed this and it's worth answering so here goes. The latest Bond film is a 3/10 because I can't stand incongruity. If the elements that make up a film clash then they destroy the film even if some of the moments within that film are good or even great. I don't like misplaced humour or silliness in a film that is supposed to be serious, it's a slap in the face. The feeling is similar to when a coward says something offensive to you and sees in your reaction that you don't like it and then says "I'm only joking." Ian Fleming's Bond needs to be re-done for television exactly as the books depict.

Films that I loved are very few and of course I don't have your experience in such matters. I loved 'The Wizard Of Oz' as a child and I still love it now. I've watched it at least 10 times. I love the story, the characters (those talking apple trees were great: "well how would you like someone come along and pick something off of you") and the sets which were magical. There was lots of my sort of humour in it as well particularly when the Tin Man offers the solution of counting sheep to the sleeplessness of the cowardly lion and he answers "that doesn't do any good I'm afraid of them." I also love the way his tail swishes about throughout the film......Swish swish!

My favourite serious film was the 1965 drama 'Flight Of The Phoenix' with James Stewart. It was re-made again about 10 years ago and it was a hatchet job. Other great films were 'The Magnificent Seven (where even Steve Mcqueen was outshone by the masculine Yul Brynner)' and 'The African Queen.' I liked the first three early bond films, I also liked nearly everything I saw Steve Mcqueen in and I liked some of Clint Eastwood's movies. There are many others as well that I can't think of now but the one's above are some of the outstanding ones. Swish swish!

    Chris

'Flight Of The Phoenix' directed by Robert Aldrich
'The Magnificent Seven do John Sturges
'The African Queen.' do John Huston[/QUOTE]

Not bad. They all directed work of more interest than most.

I no longer support la politique des auteurs as in the days of la nouvelle vague but since you named 4 films:

La Boucher (Claude Chabrol) is a flawless master piece. (I have a DVD of every film he made).

La Nuit Americaine (Francois Truffaut) is a work of ecstatic joy.

Citizen Kane (Orson Welles) is the product of true cinematic genius

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is Peckinpah at his best and Sam at his best is perfection.

The Bank Job has just started on Film 4. Should I bother?
