    Question Bloody urine

    Hi folks,

Have any of you experienced bright red urine before? I returned from a gentle 8 mile off road run and during which I felt the need to go a little but managed to go when I got home. I was greeted by a stream of red wine coloured p#ss so I was a little taken aback. There was a bit of discomfort toward the end of my crown jewels and the urine returned to champagne clarity after drinking water throughout the day. There was a speck of blood later that night but nothing since. I've been to the docs and will have a blood test next week after taking a weeks worth of antibiotics for possible urinary infection.

I dont have any back/abdominal pain and feel fine.

I'm hoping it happened as a result of friction when running and perhaps going to the gents before I'd properly warmed up down there, further adding to the stress.

Anyone experience anything similar or is it just me?

    One website states:-

Strenuous exercise. It's not quite clear why exercise causes gross hematuria. It may be trauma to the bladder, dehydration or the breakdown of red blood cells that occurs with sustained aerobic exercise. Runners are most often affected, although almost any athlete can develop visible urinary bleeding after an intense workout.

I'd ask for a urine test as well. There could be things missed in a blood test. Keep your fluid levels up to help your renal clearance.

    Thanks both.

I haven't run since and am a bit loathe to until cause determined. It's put me off running long distances to be honest.

Might seem a daft question but thought I'd ask - you haven't been drinking beetroot juice by any chance?

Yes I've had some thing similar after running an ultra, it cleared up after 12-18 hours. if it persists i would definitely get the blood test.
I also get it after eating lots of beetroot....

I had some water with blackcurrant and initially put it down to this but there was certainly blood there. I think it maybe came from a tear in urethra caused by the running.

No, blackcurrant juice won't do it. If it's not beetroot juice I reckon it'll be blood. As for the cause, I haven't a clue. Could understand it after an ultra as IDP has said but not after a 8 miler. Get it checked out.

I had a similar effect after running the 4 Lakeland Passes at the beginning of October. I was sort of recovering a malarial bubonic cold at the time and had camped the night before in freezing conditions, which didn't exactly improve my hacking cough at the start. I also sweated profusely on the way round even though it was fairly chilly and, by the finish, I guess I would have been pretty darn dehydrated despite drinking plenty. Anyway my first wee in Rosthwaite village hall was just like weeing 'sumptuous plum' from this Dulux colour chart. Fortunately things returned to normal soon after

I get it too. The first time was after doing weights in the gym and it was really scary, bright red pee. Since then I get it on and off if I've done a particularly long or strenuous run. The doctor said it was nothing to worry about and would be from the strenuous activity. Its good to get it checked out anyway though.
