    Re: Podcast about the Round

Why would it not be available to future generations, irrespective of the numbers who try in the next few years ? What authority would the National Park Authority have to stop attempts, can they fence off parts of routes if they become too eroded ? They can't stop people walking/running where they want in the fells can they ? Genuine question, appreciate you may have concerns regarding current numbers, but what is the problem with more people out on the hills - sounds like something that everyone who believes that people should get out and exercise would be happy with.

I read it the other way. I thought he was saying it is our duty to pass it on to future generations, but a balance must be got between publicity and "passing it on".

    Re: Podcast about the Round

I for one was really happy to hear a new UK centric podcast focussing on long distance off road running, whatever you like to call it - I managed to get through to the end and enjoyed most of it. Some of the interviews could have done with some editing, particularly the first one.

I would agree that it was too long and 1 hour for me is about right; I accept this is largely down to personal preference but you could have had 3 episodes in the bag and released one a week whilst you worked on new content. I thought the results section was dull and not at all suited to the medium. One additional thing which stood out for me was that it was obvious that the main presenter was reading from a script, which came across as a bit stilted and artificial.

I expect all these things will be ironed out in time, and credit to all of you for putting the time in to produce the show, looking forward to the next one

Interestingly Richard has penned a new Epilogue to the revised edition which wrestles with the forces that some suggest the book has unleashed. It makes interesting reading.

My key concern is trying to ensure that this great challenge remains available as a test for future generations. It is all about balance, and I don't believe things are in balance during the current period. More "care and honour" required.
As one who has observed the BGR become a 3-ring circus in recent years I have sympathy with Morgan's views.

To me the most interesting aspect of the reissue of FITC is that Richard Askwith has felt it necessary to write an 8 page epilogue to address criticisms made of the "FITC effect" and commentaries on trends in fell running, post-FITC, including by this writer (who is quoted by Richard in the new edition). As Morgan implies, Richard debates this concern-he does not just reject it.

Richard is of course a professional journalist, FITC is a well written book and that helped it sell over 45,000 copies- which, as Morgan has noted, produced some unintended consequences.

For good or bad, FITC is the second most important book published on fell running and so a 700 word review of the 2013 reissue, which focuses on the epilogue, will appear in the next Fellrunner.

And, perhaps not surprisingly, the review concludes with the same extract independently quoted by Morgan above.
