I have done dinghy racing in the past though
A team with a chance of winning will expect you to be able to do the Scafell Pike leg in 7:30 or less. That's about the time you have if you come in to Whitehaven the earliest you can after low water and leave at the last chance before the next low water. We ran 7:35 in 2011 and bounced along the bottom as we motored out of the outer harbour. Remember also that the Scafell Pike leg is probably less than 24 hours after running Snowdon. It's possible to win if you can't do that time, but a top team is unlikely to want you.

Front Runners are quite quick these days. Certainly should be able to do the scafell leg on one tide. You also need a fast boat to win

That's important but also being used to being at sea.. or at least sea sick is also a big help..

The year we won King of the Mountains the Irish lads were probably the better runners but they suffered badly and never really recovered.. but still ran solid times.. Martin and I were both pretty experienced at being at sea and running off the boat so that was a massive help as we got over the initial lumpiness quickly..

The first two legs are close to each other, 20 miler - with a good 16 miles on the road, followed the next day by another what 25? miles plus the biking.. you then have the recovery until the Ben day..

    Great race.

Looks like typical 3 peaks weather for the start on Saturday with pretty fresh westerly winds. Best of luck to all competing in this, I'll be watching from the yacht club bar

Found a GPS tracker on the 3 Peaks Yacht Race site! Just shows the boats though. Some are at Whitehaven already!

Earlier start than usual (1400 yesterday) and strong SWerlies got the fleet to Caernarfon not far off record times. Then today there has been a strong Werly since early morning - ideal for sailing North - which is now abating and turning Southerly.

The strong winds look to be favouring the larger boats - the two in Whitehaven, Dido and Nunatak, are both 40+ feet.

I think it could be tight leaving Whitehaven amongst the leading three. It's high tide just after 1700 therefore, unless conditions completely drop, White Cloud should be in port in a couple of hours; the runners off the leading two should be back around midnight, which is low tide therefore they will not be leaving immediately. By the time the lock gates open there could be three boats waiting to leave.

The winds have dropped therefore progress across Liverpool bay has dropped to a crawl. White Clouds slowed but have just gone into Whitehaven and are probably the last boat that will get in on this tide.

Dido and Nunatak should both be ready to leave when the lock gates open early in the morning (0130ish?) with White Clouds following them out around 0430.
