Dido just past the south tip of Galloway, 146nm from Fort William, flying along 4nm up on Nunatak (slower just now ~ on a different tack I presume? I only went sailing once though I'd love to repeat it!), White Cloud only another 7nm behind (which equates to almost an hour?)
it can all change on the turn of a tide. we once sat tacking for 3 hours and moved just 100m. the other boats had no tide and started to catch up quite quickly, we got a slight increase in wind speed and managed to creep over a turning tide and although we were only doing 2 knts and the occasional bit of rowing we knew that the boats behind were stuffed as the tidal flow was increasing against them. in fact they anchored up for 4 hours while we got away.![]()
Not so sure about the idea if getting (nearly) shipwrecked is part of the bargain! Not to mention all that rowing..

I remember bouncing over the bar...it isn't fun. I was helming at the time and it flipped me across the deck..most uncomfortable. Most of the racing boats push the draft issue, we spent the night on our side in the entrance to Whitehaven after trying to "squeeze" over the bar there on a falling tide. Had we got over the race was all but won as we would have had an 8 hour start on the next boat.
You should've read the link11 mins outside the Ben record set in 1984 and 7 mins outside the mountain aggregate time from 2007
The fierce weather on the first sail made most runners sick and left them shaken up for a night time run over Snowdon, so times were relatively slow, making the best aggregate time a huge challenge..
And the Ben Nevis record has stood for nearly 30 years, and many think it will never be beaten because the path has deteriorated and today’s runners are constrained to stay on the main path and include an extra checkpoint at the half-way lochan.
The fierce weather at the start was exactly like our year.. we only just won the snowdon leg but I was pretty ill, but the rest of the teams were hammered far more so luckily we just got that leg then it was flat sailing.. and rowing..
I heard the 84 ben record was questionable, as they thought we may have broken it last year, I think there was questions about where the record went from or something..
