Just a quick thought.

you might not agree. then again, you might.
I trust your exam went well yesterday, and that you weren't distracted by the moors too much.
I agree with about 99% of what you are saying.
I recall there was a similar thread or blog somewhere about the BGR.
Maybe now the Trigger is >3 years old the annual reccying will tail off by those repeating the race annually, as they don't see the need.
Just Maybe.
Exam went well, thanks, now just the last one to go on Thursday.
I remember the BGR thing, it becoming trodded out, and more like a trade route. Hopefully what you say about the trigger becoming older, less people will see the need to recce it, and the lines will go back to their less defined nature.
I get the sense that with Tanky's there was a lot more mixture of LE, Wild Boar, Torside. These days with Forums, blogs, etc. people are finding out about the good lines. Would The Trigger Crowden checkpoint officals have any stats about the people turning left to head to LE/Wild boar compare to those going the Torside route. My guess is the vast majority of the field turned left there.
[devil's advocate]
Maybe as it gets older and the 'best' line(s) become decided or widely known, these will get 'trodden in' rather than people ranging over a wide(r) area...? e.g. the trod up Lawrence Edge..?
[/devil's advocate]
I'm not a fan of trods becoming 'trodden in' as you say - there are lines up on the edge of Bleaklow which are clearly visible from my house about 4km away. These are trods, not paths marked on maps. I'm personally not a fan of running on rough ground but I'm doing my best to avoid the lines which are getting well worn.
Agreed, I was trying to play devils advocate and say maybe it'll get worse as the race becomes older/more established. If runners reccie over a wider area/different lines the impact is spread rather than being concentrated on one favoured line.
Unfortunately I can't think of a nice solution at the moment.Apart from lots of snow to cushion our footfalls.

Can somebody answer a question for me. When people put up photos on Flickr from, say Sunday's Trigger, can I legally swipe one to put on my blog?
