I guess i'm biased but Joss gets my vote.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have spent many an hour on the fells with him over the last 15 years or so, his countless feats of endurance and sheer determination coupled with his humour and general humility are truly an inspiration. I had a memorable day supporting him on his beating the wasdale parish bounds run over the Queens diamond jubilee weekend, to cross a trod or two which is now part of common race route knowledge and to here Joss recall the many hours spent reccying the area to finally decide this was the one certainly puts his attention to detail in perspective. It is also is humbling to here tales of races of old where he did this and that just to gain a few yards, his respect for the land and others is something I never tire of hearing and the tales of bad weather endurance are really amazing.

I really do understand people putting forth runners who have excelled and won championships, I admire them immensley, in fact i was in awe at the OCT a couple of years ago when I lined up next to Mr Jebb but I am a chap who enjoys fell running for the spirit and freedom really, I'm never fast and don't enter too many races but I feel proud to be part of this sport and just wanted to chuck my vote in !

I hope we all get through these testing times with rule changes, we're above this, we really are, for the sake of our sport lets get behind the Committe, support the RO's and take heed from Mr Naylor, "tha really shouldn't stop, it slows you down!"

Happy Christmas to all and enjoy your running

Nicely put. I agree. He'd get my vote too.

She once overtook me on one of Dave Woodheads races over Withins area wearing a rather tight lycra spiderman outfit. I had every incentive to keep up (and did for a while) but then she dissappeared into the distance.

Joss Naylor is not the best fellrunner ever. He's a very naughty boy. Now go away.

Based on results in the classics.... Billy Bland is the best ever. Followed by Gavin Bland and Andy Styan.

    A great article - http://www.fellrunner.org.uk/articles/lct/lakewomen.pdf

(Not sure why it's called lake women as it doesn't focus on women runners.)

Base it on British and English combined and its still Holmsie.

The lakeland lads are very good but the Bingley lad just has the edge.

Yes, it'd be interesting to see a similar article based on the Champs. I suppose if that was done then people like Rob Hope and Simon Bailey would feature a lot more strongly as well?

Were the Champs around in the days of Billy Bland etc? If not then I don't suppose it's fair to say they weren't as good because they don't feature as strongly as more recent runners.

Also, the Classics are a good reference point as they definitely have always been around (although they won't have been the focus for a lot of more recent runners if they've been focusing on the Champs, so again it's a bit tricky to compare).

Suppose to an extent it's subjective. Some of Billy Bland's times, and the places he got them, would be enough to put him as number one for a lot of people regardless what others have done elsewhere, I'd have thought.
