Doing the OCT this year for the first time. I've done enough in the lakes to know most of the route although there is a little bit i'm unclear on - the section from the base of Little Narrowcove to the head of Mosedale on the way to Cockley Beck. I haven't been to the head of Eskdale or indeed upper Eskdale for years.
It appears from the map and my memory of this magnificent place that the bets route is to go over the Esk and stay left of Great Moss as you work down the valley, hitting the little col at 227052 and heading SW to hit the path near Pianet Knott before climbing up to the saddle and dropping into Mosedale.
Any thoughts?
There is an alternative off Sca fell pike, which is more direct. But the first bit is a bit awkward through flat-ish crags.(worth a recce if you want to do it). After that it is mainly steep grass with a stream to follow. At the bottom you cross then follow the river around great moss and scar lathing, and the rest is how you describe.
That is the best route I know of anyway.

Very useful new website. My memory of great moss was sketchy, oops.
You will enjoy it though Mark, it's a great day out in the hills. Just hope the weather cooperates this year. The drop off Sca fell pike is a bit tricky at first on that line though. I remember that much.
The route on the site isn't necessarily the BEST line.
I think the route on your map is what I would go for.
I'm going to go up and have a look I think. any excuse for a foray into eskdale. Thanks Alan and others for the advice.
Only done this three times but I think the route on the site is a better option - if the weather plays fair you may will see a line of people along that route as you head down Scafell.
Agree that this is a great day in the hills and highly recommend it.
