I'd forgotten all about this one. I ended up buying a singlespeed Genesis Day One cyclocross bike cheap. It has a flip flop rear wheel and I eventually succumbed to temptation and it's now fixed. I got quite a bit of use out of it last year and even managed a century ride on it. I like to get out on it but maybe the gearing is a bit tall to be using year round (or I'm just not very fit). It takes a fair bit of getting used to and I've had a few 'brown trouser' moments...
What size gear are you riding?
I ride fixed during the winter - and would ride in the summer if fitter!
Traditionally, back in the day ( 50's & 60's ) roadies would ride fixed through the winter. 62 - 63 inches would be the norm - e.g. 44:19
Many clubmen would ride this gear on a daily basis, upping it for time testing or going on the track.
A friend used to ride a Genesis Day One on 57 inch fixed, with the local Rough Stuff Fellowship. He was fast enough on-road and he managed to tackle all the off-road sections.

I was a bit of an oddball until I was abducted by aliens; but I'm perfectly OK now!
