wharfeego, I'm speechless about what you went through there. Bloody well done on looking after the guy, and good luck to him too of course (anyone know how he's getting on?)
And hey, you caught me nicely there, apparently having a sit-down while getting a sliding kick in the backI was wearing #324 under the waterproof -- Charlie Wartnaby, came 116th. You gave me some nice encouragement as my gingerness as a southern wuss was obviously apparent!
Great work Andy; your post is a harrowing read, so I can understand Wheeze's concern for you. We are all fortunate to have so many out supporting races, and very fortunate you were there at the right time & place on Saturday. Certainly all the best to the injured and his family, it sounds like a very long road to recovery.
All the earliest articles are headlined "65ft" (see grough.co.uk); I'm convinced it started out reported as 20m before being 'rounded' from 65ft to 100ft, which converts back to 30m! They probably refer to vertical height in official reports?
Lakeland MR teams have had a busy weekend, ■ Scafell Pike late on Thursday Night, ■ Corridor Route for this, the ambulance seen heading past Derwentwater for an unrelated rescue on ■ King's How, Borrowdale, and then two on Sunday, a fall at ■ Scale force, Buttermere (Sea King airlift), and the air ambulance deployed to ■ Dunmail Raise for another 'horror fall'. There seems to be a good line of work/hobby in helicopter photography!
only on this forum could you see the discussion as to whether a fall was measured on the ground or as a vertical distance. someone came up with a number that they thought was plausible. erm - that's it.
numbers aside, that's a bloody long way to fall.
fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery, and well done Andy.
sobering.
my first Borrowdale and i loved it. clear goals for next year now too: get rather closer to 4 hours for Borrowdale and 3P which both took me the same time.
Monkey logic must be different from day-to-day precisionI was almost compelled to reply to IDP's very sensible post that Whernside's not in The Lakes and it was Cave Rescue..
Agreed. I was more bothered that news websites had arbitrarily increased the size of the tumble by more than 50% based (probably) on no evidence whatsoever. Having seen the evidence (photo), it turns out they might have been right, on this occasion.numbers aside, that's a bloody long way to fall.
Not sure if anyone else picked up the comment from "Mike" on the news report in the North West Evening Mail (http://www.nwemail.co.uk/home/fell-r...bria-1.1152465). Now there's a whole new debate!!!
