    Midweek XC tonight, 2.5m/290'

Felt like upgrading to a midweek fartlek, but there's Gt Wherny on saturday and i'm out to beat my previous best of 40.04. It would be such a milestone if i could and the first time bettering a PB since my big out.

    Today's run- Crown run 2, 7m/1450'

    routemap18.jpg

Another relatively runnable excuse to visit The Crown Inn, Middlesmoor. Soreness on the side of the right knee from the off, quads tendon sore on and off all the way round; don't know why these things keep on coming back they just do. Lost the path around Blayshaw Gill- it just didn't exist. Dodgy descent off Flay Stones, lots of Glacial Deposition hidden by deep reeds and dying bracken, and a cliff to get down to the beck at the end. Awesome, fast run off the moorside past High and Low Riggs; blasted into a field of Tups and full speed and thought i might end up getting some trouble, but DT wasn't one of them so i was ok. I was for some reason applauded by some lost-looking frat boy/girl bunch of uni students on the way back up to Middlesmoor. They cheered cordially and accused me of being an Orienteer...how dare they, almost started windmilling...and wished me the win at the event they thought i was competing in. Too much moonshine if you ask me.

3 yorkshire puddings in real gravy at The Crown after, all washed down with a pint of Semer Water pale ale which is quite a remarkable pint- very light in colour and very refreshing. Said hello to a nice black Labrador on the way out.

    Midweek Fartlek tonight, 2.9m/395'

First ever headtorch run with a rubbish old Tikka i use to fix the car, pace was difficult to find because i couldn't see anything properly and the woods are full of stuff like roots and things to turn an ankle on. There are also monsters in woods and the miserable 40 lumens i had will not be enough to scare them away. I'm plastered in mud too, it's on my boatrace and the lot, is this normal for winter headtorchers??

Wednesday weights took place this week, but i've backed off to 2x15 on 10kg a side plus the bar which leaves me with no problems. I'm not sure if this is just a waste of time or not, but if i think of it as a rehab exercise it goes down a bit better with my conscience.

    Today's run- Kay Head Allotment, 8.5m/1300', a feral thrutch-a-thon

    routemap19.jpg

Knocked a mile off each end of this for a warmup/warmdown, probably a bit less runnable than i'd have liked, i was paggered by the time i got to Angram. Took the camera as it was a nice day...

Looking over to Stean Moor and Meugher on the way out

Nice view of Little Whernside after an epic bog and tussock bash

A nice refreshing drink of brown water from a bog drain was the order of the day after a terrible, rough run off Brown Hill

It's the tipple of champions this stuff, tastes like tea and i've heard all the top runners swear by it, i absolutely insist on it.

Injurywatch- the side of my knee started to get sore not long in. I think it's the rough ground forcing an abnormally high amount of Tensor recruitment, it rarely occurs on trails or better ground.

    Nice view off Angram dam

Something a bit faster for next week i think, i'd love a PB at Dunnerdale.

I have stayed in youth hostels (too long ago to remember which ones) where that stuff comes out of the taps. I agree with you that it tastes excellent.

We used to bath in it as kids when we were up at the house in Brough, North Stainmore. There was no mains water until the mid 80s, so all our water came from a dammed beck up on a fell called Iron Band. The pipe was best part of half a mile long and i remember going up with grandad to check the swirl pots along its route and clear the dam. We used to filter the drinking water and it took about an hour to get a litre or so out of this old chromed filter, but baths were taken in fresh brown water. Everyone up there lived like that, i could live like that today.

    Midweek Fartlek tonight, 2.9m/395'

The new brighter headtorch is about the minimum i could live with. The problem seems to be differentiating between fallen leaves and roots or fallen branches at speed, it's difficult with 140 lumens. I'm going to try and make the harder midweek fartlek run the norm now, and only drop to the tempo pace XC if i'm in some way impaired. It's taken several months of swapping to and fro, but it was necessary to avoid a sudden step change in loading. Wednesday weights will probably work every 2wks.

Reading back through the first 6 pages of this thread makes me realise how far i've moved on since, even though it's taken nearly a year and a half and i'm still only about 70% back at it. It's a testament to complete commitment and focus really, that and knowing when not to go for a run. Anniversary Dunnerdale next week, had to go steady last time, but it'll be a fast one this time as i'm after a new PB. I've been increasing the speed of these medium distance training runs i've been doing and i'd like to hope it's a mathematical certainty and i've got nowhere to hide and no excuses for going slower than 50.20

Had a run round the Strid Wood trail today, 5m/650'. I decided to time myself and ran a minute slower than my previous best for that route. I could have run harder, but i wanted to see what effect focusing on maintaining good technique over outright speed had on my time. The floor was thick with leaves which was bothering me a lot, as all the stones peeping out of the floor were hidden from view, and you don't want to hit one of those. I'm yet to set a new record for this dispite a couple of attempts, but it'll have to wait until i can see the ground properly i think. I ran 34.53 and could probably find a minute when i can see where my feet are going.
