My personal choice would have been David Davis, but he's not having a go. I hope he might be part of the team to negotiate the withdrawal.

I don't think Gove has a chance of winning. I think this move is a stop Boris and help make sure May gets it move.
Boris is popular among the members and would have been favourite against May, but not cut and dry because he does lack ministerial experience.
Gove against May will be a walkover for May as I cannot see the members voting for Gove in large numbers following his pre-referendum statements.

May has said she will appoint a Brexiteer to head up the negotiations and I thnk she was alwasy 50/50, a bit like Boris, but decided too come down on the side of the Govt without actually campaigning.

Watch out for Andrea Leadsome. She has a good CV in business, later to Parliament, but came across well in the TV debates.

I think it could be an all female run-off.

I'm not sure why Crabb and Fox have stood. Ego perhaps? Can't see them lasting long.

I don't buy in to the crisis / mess debate. We've had examples in the past of a PM stepping down mid-term and a pause while a new one is elected.
The Civil service run the country, the cabinet is still in place as is the PM in this instance. Every Summer Govt is faced with this situation anyway as the Commons goes in to summer recess.

Teresa May would be my choice. She seems to exude calm and competence, which is what is required right now. She has already held one of the main offices of state for six years so has the required seniority and experience. She hasn't particularly alienated either Brexiteers or Remainers in the Tory party nor people in the EU who she will need to negotiate with. This couldn't have been said for Boris, which would probably have been a big issue.

Like WP, I was impressed with Andrea Leadsom during the referendum campaign and think she should be promoted to the Cabinet.

I also doubt Gove even wants to be PM but that he decided it was in the country's (and Tory party's) interest to sabotage Boris. He left it a bit late in the day though!

May for me all the way. I think she would be unwavering to ALL other EU leaders and this would worry them.

The way she was in the campaign, it has made me wonder if some of this was conducted in cahoots with DC.

This article by Peter Oborne states exactly why Teresa May shouldn't be Prime Minister:

And another by the same writer:

'I wonder if Mrs May has the intellect to grasp how dangerous her conduct has become. There is a giant deficit of trust at the heart of British public life, and it is precisely because of politicians like her'

    Amen!

    My thoughts exactly.

Dave: "Theresa, I'll take all the heat, and then if we win, I can coronate you. If I lose, I'll resign and we can get Gove to stitch up Boris so you'll take over. Stay over there in the shadows and bide your time."

    Video wouldn't play.

Realistically how could we know based on that article, there's nothing in the text to indicate either way unless in the video someone pipes up with "I'm a racist"

I see Mrs May has just cancelled tomorrow's vote. Interesting times indeed. She's due to tell us why in a few minutes. I'll be surprised if it's anything other than coded politician speak for "we didn't think we could win it".
