Yes, and my point was that the commercial stuff is "entertainment", whereas what we forumites do on the fells is sport.

Yes, it is a commercial world and we all do live in it for better or worse. There are many things that are better but the subverting of athletic endeavour for personal gain and mass entertainment is not one of them.

tbh performance enhancing drugs are almost certainly used in 'amateur' sports as has been reported on in USA cycling etc. Athlete's, I'm sure, will be using them to compete in local road races and in cycling events such as Sportifs etc in the UK. I know of at leat one guy banned, admittedly some years ago now, in triathlon. He wasn't world or even International level. Drug taking in sport will never be stopped I'm afraid. All we can do is take some satisafaction in personal performances and achievements on the assumption that it is a level playing field. As for pro sports...they're what they are as someone stated...entertainment! Cycling has always been such, and has always been...to varying degrees, 'drug' fuelled.

Another alternative view of 'professionalism' :- Why spoil your enjoyable sport/pastime/hobby by turning it into your job and putting yourself at the behest of an unscrupulous agent/manager/sponsor who puts you under incredible pressure, just so that they can live off your back?

Those Sky jerseys will soon be worth about as much as the infamous old Man Utd grey away strip
    Poacher turned game-keeper
