Thanks for that. I must admit I thought trails shoes/fell shoes were the same thing! I guess they are best tried on before purchase. Any recommendations on retailers, brands, etc?

There is a massive spread within the "trail shoe" family. From ones that are perfectly ok on the roads through to the like of Inov8 Terroc and Salamon Fellraisers that are very much on the "fell" end of the spectrum. Both of those would be excellent choices. The Inov8 300 is the fell shoe of choice.
Be carefull within a couple of years you will be like me with a large box full of shoes for every occasion.

Personally I reckon the Fellraisers were the best shoes I ever bought. Just retired a pair after 1800 Km. They were looking a bit tired by that stage though.
