...a cuckoo calling at the top of Rigg Lane, on Beacon Fell.

Hard to imagine really. Could it have been a hoax? I once played a Cuckoo song on the loud speaker of my phone and everyone near me listened intently, they all thought there was a Cuckoo in the vicinity.

...The Cuckoo comes in April
She sings her song in May
In the middle of June she changes her tune
and July she flies away...

I believe that it is the male that sings the iconic song.
