Emily. my running buddy & I thought that it was unbelievably early - but it was quite clear; not aware of anything else that we could have mistaken it for, have you any ideas?

No but we do have a cuckoo obsession in my family so I will listen out.

This needs to be sung or spoken in a Adge Cutler and the Wurzels voice for best effect but....

    The Cuckoo comes in April
She sings her song in May
In the middle of June she changes her tune
    and July she flies away.

Of course, climate change might have made this a complete Charlie-Foxtrot

Hard to imagine really. Could it have been a hoax? I once played a Cuckoo song on the loud speaker of my phone and everyone near me listened intently, they all thought there was a Cuckoo in the vicinity.

I believe that it is the male that sings the iconic song.

Does seem very early for the cuckoo, but who knows? This week Missus has caught the first early migrant moths (small mottled willow) probably come from channel islands and shouldn't be here in Wales yet!

You believe correctly and I stand corrected. Although in this topsy-turvey world, not wanting us to be accused of being transphobes, they might self-identify as the other gender!

Red kite spent quite a while circling a tree with a grey squirrel in it.
    Don't know the outcome.
