10.41 miles, 2,515 feet, 3 hours 22 minutes: Loughrigg trails, taking in Fishgarths Wood, Todd Crag, Lily Tarn, the race route from the fell gate to the top, down the steps and down through Deerbolts Woods to Grasmere shore, along to White Moss, then back up to the top via Loughrigg Terrace and the steps overlooking Grasmere. Lots of sunshine and blue sky. Some high fluffy and streaky clouds. No wind, no rain. Terrain dry/damp with good grip. Quite a few walkers about; 1 runner seen - in the valley.

Of necessity I am getting used to descending the steps to Grasmere shore - the bracken has blocked so many of what are normally good ways down.

13.3 miles, 3,148 feet, 4 hours 14 minutes: Rothay Bridge to Silver How and back, going out via the track around Loughrigg Tarn and across to Swinescar Pike and Lang How; returning via Loughrigg top. Lots of high fluffy clouds, some sunshine/blue sky. No wind nor rain. Terrain dry/damp with good grip apart from the occasional rock. Not many walkers on the fells. I came across the AAC Tuesday/Friday runners on Silver How - there were about 6 of them; I saw three other runners.

The section next to the wall on the Loughrigg Silver How route is distinctly unpleasant: bracken.

10.41 miles, 2,905 feet, 3 hours 6 minutes: Rothay Bridge - Miller Bridge - Rydal Park - Low Sweden Bridge - rock step - High Sweden Bridge - Scandale - Red Screes - south ridge - Golden Rule Pub - Ambleside. Sunshine and high fluffy clouds. A few seconds of drizzle. No significant wind. Terrain mainly dry with good grip. Not many walkers about; 2 runners seen.

No cattle on the Scandale lane today - thankfully.

I was shouted at on North Road near the pub: "Get out of the road!". The first half of the road has no pavements at all, the second half has uneven pavements thronging with visitors. I was going to give him a piece of my mind but the traffic stopped him from catching up with me.

So runners get this as well as cyclists! It has not been a frequent occurrence for me, but a few weeks ago someone shouted "Get off the road!" while I was cycling along a section of dual carriageway A-road between two minor-road turnings.

10.38 miles, 3,355 feet, 3 hours 35 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 2 sides, including along the ridge to the true top, and up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate. Overcast - high clouds. It drizzled for a few minutes. A moderate breeze from the south. Terrain damp and slippery in places. Not many walkers about; 2 runners seen.

The race route descent is still enjoyable.

12.41 miles, 3,264 feet, 4 hours 2 minutes: Rydal Round from/to Ambleside, going next to but not entering the sports field. A mixture of high fluffy clouds and very high thin streaky clouds, so any sunshine was quite weak. A warm wind from the south. No rain. Terrain mainly dry with good grip. Not many walkers on the fells, but I did start early; 3 runners seen.

I went to the left/west of the 1st, 2nd and 4th tops on the way up, south west of Dove Crag, then down the race side of the wall and the rock step.

10.45 miles, 2,544 feet, 3 hours 6 minutes: Loughrigg trails, including down the race route to the road at High Close - horrible - down through Deerbolts Woods to Grasmere shore, along to White Moss, then back up to the top via Loughrigg Terrace and the steps overlooking Grasmere. Overcast with high clouds. No sun nor rain. A warm breeze from the south. Terrain dry with good grip. Lots of walkers on the fell; 3 runners seen.

I got stuck behind a large group at a gate near White Moss - it turned out the holdup was due to people taking selfies just the other side of the gate.

Who should I overtake going up the steps overlooking Grasmere but Charmian!

With my friend from London climbing his last two Wainwrights being Silver Howe and Loughrigg before lunch in the Badger Bar. I'm not the enemy Mike :-)

17.16 miles, 4,611 feet, 5 hours 1 minute: Ambleside to Kentmere and back, taking in Sallows both ways, and Sour Howes, Wansfell Pike and the race descent from the Pike on the way back. Overcast, with the cloud base at about 2,500 feet. A few minutes of drizzle, some spells of weak sunshine, no significant wind. Terrain damp/wet and slippery in places. Lots of walkers on the fells, and I saw lots of runners, many on their way to the Kentmere Horseshoe race.

I took the trod heading east then south from the top of Sallows - it is quite well defined at first but soon fades into nothing, so it was off piste through tall vegetation to finally reach the northern part of the high track between Ings and Kentmere. I need to try it from the south to see if it makes more sense.
