13 miles, 3,338 feet, 3 hours 50 minutes: Rothay Bridge - Miller Bridge - Rydal Park - Rydal Round - Ambleside. Sunshine and high clouds, no rain, a moderately strong wind from the south west, terrain dry/damp with good grip. Not many walkers on the fells; 6 runners seen.

I went to the left/west of the 1st, 2nd and 4th tops on the ascent, to the south west of Dove Crag, then down the race side of the wall and the rock step. On the race side of the wall I stayed away from the rocky path right next to the wall, taking the narrow mainly grassy trod instead - when dry I think it is the nicer way down.

Today it took me 40 minutes to get to the top of Nab Scar - beats 47.

13.02 miles, 3,362 feet, 3 hours 45 minutes: Rothay Bridge - Borrans Road - Lake Road - Old lake Road - Blue Hill Road/Lane - Wansfell Pike via the steps - along the ridge to the true top - down to the upper section of Nanny Lane - back up to the Pike - down the race route - Rothay Park - Clappersgate - Fishgarths Wood - Todd Crag - Lily Tarn - Loughrigg top - down past the old golf club - Miller Bridge - Rothay Bridge. High fluffy and streaky clouds, some weak sunshine, no rain, no significant wind, terrain mainly dry with good grip. Not many walkers about; 3 runners seen.

I have come across one of Helm Hill's stars 3 times in about a week - Kentmere, then Wansfell, and today on Loughrigg.

13.82 miles, 3,410 feet, 4 hours 7 minutes: Ambleside to Sallows and Sour Howes and back, going out via High Skelghyll, Skelghyll Lane and the Garburn Pass, and returning via Nanny Lane, Wansfell Pike and the race descent. Hazy sunshine and high streaky clouds, no rain, no significant wind, terrain mainly dry with good grip. Not many walkers about, apart from at the top of the Pike, where there must have been 20 people. Only 1 runner seen.

The race descent from the Pike is now very borderline - another week or so and it will be too unpleasant to go down.

It was so nice when I was in the shade today - one of the reasons I chose the route.

10.15 miles, 2,370 feet, 3 hours 7 minutes: Loughrigg trails, including down the race route to the road at High Close, down through Deerbolts Woods to Grasmere shore, along to White Moss, then back up to the top via Loughrigg Terrace and the steps overlooking Grasmere. A mixture of hazy sunshine, blue sky, high fluffy clouds, and even higher streaky clouds. No rain, no wind, terrain mainly dry with good grip. Quite a few walkers on the fell; 3 runners seen.

Because of the tall bracken on the race route I wore my Pertex top for that section - it made it surprisingly acceptable.

12.91 miles, 3,647 feet, 4 hours 14 minutes: Rydal Round from/to Ambleside. Overcast, with the cloud base at about 2,500 feet. No rain. A very strong surprisingly cold wind from the south. Terrain dry with good grip. Quite a few walkers on the fells; 1 runner seen.

I took the 2nd and 4th trods on the left/west on the ascent, went to the south west of Dove Crag, down the race/east side of the wall and down the rock step. Again, I took the grassy path away from the wall, rather than the rocky path next to it.

44 minutes today to Nab Scar - this includes a mile leading up to the kissing gate at the bottom of Nab Scar - I am measuring from the gate at the bottom of the last descent on the Rydal Round, the second last gate in the event.

10.69 miles, 2,930 feet, 3 hours 28 minutes: Red Screes from/to Ambleside, ascending via Low Sweden Bridge, the rock step, High Sweden Bridge and Scandale, and descending via the south ridge and the Golden Rule Pub. A mixture of hazy sunshine and high fluffy/streaky clouds. No rain, a refreshing breeze from the south west. Terrain mainly dry with good grip. Quite a few walkers about, particularly at High Sweden Bridge, which was unpleasantly busy. 4 runners seen.

I managed to run more of the ups with fewer rests today - pleased with that.

10.35 miles, 3,280 feet, 3 hours 24 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 2 sides, the first ascent being via Blue Hill Lane and the steps, then along the ridge to the true top, down to the upper part of Nanny Lane, back up to the Pike, then down the race descent. Overcast, with the clouds just skimming the higher tops. A few brief episodes of sunshine/blue sky. A few seconds of drizzle. That moderate breeze from the south west is still there. Terrain mainly dry with good grip. Lots of walkers on the fell, including one group of about 20, some of whom failed the walking and talking test. About 8 runners seen.
