11.84 miles, 2,801 feet, 3 hours 33 minutes: Rothay Bridge - Borrans Park - Old Lake Road - Blue Hill Road/Lane - up the race route steps - Wansfell Pike - Nanny Lane - base of Troutbeck Tongue via Town Head and Ing Lane - back up to the Pike via Nanny Lane - race descent - Ambleside. Mainly overcast with high fluffy clouds; some brief episodes of sunshine/blue sky. A few minutes of inconsequential drizzle. A moderate breeze from the south. Terrain anything from dry to wet/saturated/streaming/slippery. Apart from on top of the Pike there were very few walkers about. 1 runner seen.

How do you decide where to go Mike? Do you plan in advance or just set off?

Usually a general idea of which way I will go has come to me before I set out, but I often change my mind as I go along. I try to do 10 miles and at least 2,500 feet of up, and often need to add in a somewhat unnatural loop or two to achieve this.

10.09 miles, 2,894 feet, 3 hours 14 minutes: Red Screes, ascending via Rydal Park, Low Sweden Bridge, the rock step, High Sweden Bridge and Scandale, and descending via the south ridge and the Golden Rule Pub. Sunshine, blue sky and thin high streaky clouds. No rain. A moderate breeze from the south east. Terrain variable - dry in places, wet/saturated/slippery elsewhere. Given how nice a day it is, I was surprised how few walkers were on the fells. 5 runners seen.

Well I was pootling along through Bolton Abbey on a 40 mile ride to Kettlewell when a tall, slim blonde vision appeared powering towards me in a Mapei top, hair blowing in the breeze.

It could have been coming from Appleltreewick and it wasn't wearing a helmet so who could that be?

    For sure!
