Askwith's book is OK: if you like that sort of thing.

However the most useful book ever written about fellrunning remains Sarah Rowell's "Off-Road Running" available from Amazon for £10.

Given that Sarah was a top marathon runner, a top International Mountain Runner, probably the second-best ever female fell runner, has a sports related PhD, is actively involved in International Selection, edits a sports-related magazine, has forgotten more about fell running than most Forum posters will ever know...

...well if you haven't got a copy you just aren't serious about fell running.

As for Sarah Rowell's book, it's definitely a good one, but you're not comparing like with like.

I thought the bit in Part II, where Ron mentioned his post-race rectal temperature was pushing the detail a bit far.

Did I seem over the top? Hmm I do get over enthusiastic. Last year I was scouring second hand bookshops for tomes on Fell Terriers. Don't recommend any, I've read em all!

Ron's great. He just goes on and on unrelentingly right through the two volumes. I love the bits where he lists the number of beers and ciders he's had then wonders what the flaw is in his training regime.

I don't really understand why people are comparing SMOTS with FITC with SRORR (Sarah Rowell Off Road Running).

The three are completely different books. I've read two cover to cover and enjoyed them. I haven't read the other.

Absolutely not although I admit I have read it twice. However:

I have zero interest in the BGR so thought that content tedious.

I thought the scenes from a fellrunning year were just filler: except for the complimentary references to the Lakeland Classics Trophy of course!

On the other hand the sections on the professional/ amateur problems of the past and interviews with people like Roger Ingham were very valuable and well worth placing on record.
