A colleague (now there's a word) of mine used to be a collier at A pit near Ashington and he could remember working with ponies. He said that they used to fart quite a lot (and they seemed to instinctively know when your nose was in close proximity) - hence the name of this beer, perhaps?

Not that this has anything whatsoever to do with fell ponies, or fell runners - y'understand!
