Talking of cx bikes, one of my Christmas presents turned up, belatedly, today. A DVD called 'Pure sweet hell'. http://onsuper8.blogspot.com/2006/03...weet-hell.html

The missus got it off Fleabay. It came from Australia (!!). Tbh, it's not the best bike film I've ever seen (don't tell her I said that though!). ;0)

    Here it is: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PURE-SWEET-HEL...QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks, but already got my crosser now, it is in the garage half way through being built up at the moment. Hopefully it will be finished by tommorow, and then I can get out on it!!!

In short if you have the money and the choice, I'd say use hydralics, but if not then stick with rims rather than mechanical disks (at least in my predjudicial opinion. But they're still all crap when you compare them to hydralics (excepting proper road brakes of course which are all good in their appropriate environment). You can modulate a lot better on hydralics and they use far less finger strength to stop than mechanical brakes.

Mind you the crosser will have canti's so have to get used to them!! Apparently they need a lot of adjustment too!!

If you want the bling of the brake world, go for the Juicy Ultimates!!! I have!!!
mechanical discs are better than rim brakes because they are kept away from the grit and puddles(usually) so they stay cleaner and dryer.

Not that much better though - there's more of a difference between hydralic and mechanical disks than between mechanical and rim brakes.

And there is no wear on the rim. My neighbour had a nasty accident one day when the front rim on his mountain bike collapsed when he applied the brake.

That is true, and disks are far cheaper to replace than rims - and take far less work to replace.

Still better off going for hydralic though, you can modulate with them.

That's fair enough, but if money is the issue, why not just get a disk compatible rim brake bike (like for Eg the Specialized Rockhopper) & then upgrade when you've saved up for the hydralics (you'll save more money in the long run as a good set of hydralics will last you for years.
