Avid are supposed to be the 'best of the bunch' when it comes to cable operated disc brakes. A friend of mine has them on his 'George Longstaff' custom built, drop handlebar touring bike. They modulate well and he is chuffed to bits with them. He's had the bike for around 8 years, doing a daily 10 miles each way commute and long w/e rides. His previous bike was a Dawes Galaxy with Avid cantis. He rates the discs as a big big improvement.

Anyone got any experience of the short road lever compatible V Brake? My LBS has fitted them to the crosser instead of canti's - I think I prefer them to canti's TBH as they require much less adjustment and can put in far more power. Is there any issue with using them in cross racing? I hope not as i think I will go for them over canti's now. Heck of a lot of power in them, and they look a lot nicer too!!

A.T. I've never used 'mini Vs' and I do not race CX. I just find my CX bike the most versatile and fun cross-training tool of all the bikes that I've owned over the years - on the road it has 90-95% of the capability of a quality road bike and off the road it has 90-95% of the capability of a quality non-sus MTB. The arguments that have been put forward against 'mini Vs' on CX bikes are:-
The 'vertical' arms are close enough in to the tires to cause serious clogging in really muddy ( "Belgian" ) conditions.
Both back and front, you will have a lateral loop of outer cable that could snag on branches..etc.
I have a notion that they might be banned in International events, as are disc brakes; but I guess that you might get away with them at a local level - you see plenty of discs and mini Vs at the 3PeaksCX, but that is a truly wonderful one-off event - a far better spectator spectacle than the 3PeaksFR!
I've got to totally disagree with you about mini V's looking better. A canti installation is very symmetrical; whereas the mini V's are anything but, with the loop of cable stuck out to one side, both back and front.

Frog-legs, best cross brakes I've come across... found mini v's got clogged very quickly.

Have to see how they go - will give some more feedback here. I'm glad they are permitted in the 3 peaks as I would really like to do that race - what's the latest I can enter it this year & how?

its going to be a tough one to get into this year as because of last years cancellation due to F & M scare all entries have been carried over.... well worth doing though, I've staggered around it twice and come off a distinct second best but hopefully this year I'll do a better job.

Nikalas / Chinley Churner, what models of brake have you used prior to the Frogslegs. I have some Speciality Racing Products "Mr Grumpys" and I'm not totally happy with them, despite having them on the optimum set-up and fitting BBB triple compound brake pads, all of which improved matters over the original situation. The "Grumpys" were on the bike when I bought it and look really cool in a retro sort of way; but just looking at them with an engineer's eye, tells you that the geometry is not the best it could be - far better if the straddle wire anchor points are horizontally out from the brake block clamps, rather than horizontally out from the pivot points. Avid and Tektro canti's both look to have good geometry - better than the Frogslegs; but everyone seems to say that Frogslegs are the "dog's dangs", is that because all the FrogsLegs users were on Shimano previously?? - Apart from the original XT canti, some of their geometry looks well dodgy.

There were Froglegs on the cross bike I used @ 3 Peaks last year. They put the fear of God in me. Now I've got a cross bike of my own and it's got full V brakes on it with sti adaptors. Tbh, I think these aren't too clever either. Maybe I'm too used to (hydro) discs on me mountain bikes.

Marvin, it might be worth you having a look on Fleabay or singletrack classifieds for some second hand dics. You can pick decent stuff up cheap if you look carefully.
