A great event, really enjoyed it! Thanks to everyone involved.
That was a really enjoyable stroll! First exercise since Nov 5th so there was no way I was going to run it. Turned up late as I couldn't find my keys this morning; so only started at 8:20. The good thing about starting so late is having nobody behind to pass you.:) Averaged 4mph to CP3 so soon caught up and started passing the other walkers. After CP3 I just fitted into a line of reasonably quick walkers until deciding to call it a day at CP4.
Another great Hebden - thanks chaps. Frozen ground made it a bit hard on the ankles, but there were some fast times - 3:04 I think Geoff said was the fastest. And no, it wasn't me, but I did get a PB. I managed a good headlong fall on the way off Stoodley Pike as well, which was my first for a long time.
Yes nearly as well organised as the hobble and the Yorkshireman.
First long run for me since last october, 3.58 pleased overall.
Thank you to the organisers
Probably started a bit too quickly. At one point thought I'd be sub 4 but died a bit in second half and ended up doing 4:14.
Great organisation as usual and stuffed myself with food, again as usual. Probably a bit too much because I declined the apple crumble at the end.
I know he's too modest to mention it ,but Steampig knocked 47 mins off his 2010 time.I know he hadn't trained much last year but still pretty impressive!!
Pics here www.sportsunday.co.uk
Talked to him at the finish and he was visibly chuffed, chuffed for the big fella meself, well done Steve.
Nice to see plenty of forumites and other friends today, thanks to Apple Alan Crumble Greenwood and his many hardworking helpers, a grand day out, Cheers all:thumbup:
For a fell runner and triathlete, member of LDWA who only ever competes in the Hebden, 2011 was time to put something back.
Stood on the main road helping with the car parking at 0615, did I regret telling Alan I’d do anything to help, at anytime, hmmmmm, jury’s out! Seriously tho, after helping out at fell races, triathlons and cycling events, it was good to see what goes on behind the scenes of one of my favourite events (apols walkers, but I’ll say it myself, races).
Being at the church hall for 0600 meant quite an early start, but what an exciting day ahead, so much to do and so many happy faces, and that’s gotta be good.
My first project was the car parking with Nigel, Roy and John. I was given the project of standing on the corner of the main A629 guiding the traffic into Caldene Avenue for the Community Centre car park. Quite uneventful really. Waving to those happy folk and saying hello to all (and even chatting/getting a nice comment back from those of you bothered to talk to me/awake enough to communicate, even I’m human, thanks!). Bit of stress toward the end when the traffic started to back up on the main road, but generally went well, thanks for your patience all. A chuckle when the speeding motorists got twitchy after seeing my flourescent jacket, but I’m not a power crazy jobsworth when I hide being my hi viz, honestly!
0800 and back at the hall to watch the grand departure, ooooh, it’s so nice to be relaxed and not have the stress (enjoyment?) of having 22 miles to achieve in less than 4 hours. Good luck all!
Next project up to Old Town and checkpoint 1 at 0750....what’s this, it’s 0805, Alan is running around the church hall stressing with his head up his &*%£ (I do same for the 5 mile fell race that I organise, so an event of this size, complexity and magnitude, hmmmm, fully understand). Chris who’s coming with us is (too?) busy with his breakfast and maybe too chilled! Once up at the checkpoint (we still did have plenty of time to spare Alan?!) I came up with a new way of taking numbers, much to Steve’s protestations, “It doesn’t work Clive, we don’t do it like that etc etc”. Suffice to say Steve was correct, and I’d made a right chump out of myself as my system didn’t work once the eventers were arriving in their masses....oooooops, apols Steve, I’ll know for next time no to poo poo the ideas of someone who’s been helping for years!
The 3 of us trying to take numbers was at times quite chaotic. Especially when the competitors we knew would come up to us for a chat, but I’m a bloke, I can either do chat or take numbers, can’t multitask! Hmmmmmmmm. It was quite cold up there. Saw a few non-competitors I also knew from Old Town so was a jolly (why isn’t that great word used anymore) morning. Until that is we had the news of a potential fatality. Very very sad, but I guess at least the guy went doing something he loved. Thanks to all for your great help and sense of camraderie, I really really was impressed, especially with the lady who tried to assist by mouth to mouth, and everyone else who waited and communcated and generally helped - thanks and respect. Even tho my thoughts started to wander (I think that I’d rather say cheerio doing something I love if you know what I mean), this put a slightly sombre mood on things.
Once over at checkpoint 1, I scooted off to checkpoint 5 above Cragg Vale, via the church hall to taxi John for his next helping project. Once up on the tops, I noticed how much cooler it was than Old Town. Well as Brian and Ann had done their tasks at this post year in year out, I was merely a spectator offering words of congratulations and encouragement to the team (later beefed up by Steve - no, I’m not doing numbers this time you’ll be pleased to hear!), and to all you fabulous friendly super fit sociable competitors, hats off to you all, hope you enjoyed it, I certainly enjoyed seeing your happy cheery faces.
All was going well and we were quite near to saying adieu to the final walkers when all of a sudden a massive gust of wind (where did that come from?) ripped the tent from its guy ropes (??????? CG) and blew it over a stone wall and half over the next one into another field, the table went over as well with all the excellent food and drink...argggghhhhhhhhh. Eventually sorted everything, although at times I felt like Hornblower before he climbed the ranks, holding onto a sail for my dear life, to stop the tent travelling over the moors to Blackshawhead! See, it’s not all about standing, chatting, and admiring all you fit folk!
Anyway, after the sweeper arrived, helped with (some) packing away, and back home to Hebden via the church hall. Pondered.
A great day, and a great learning experience, if you’re a helper, thanks, now I know (some of) what’s involved.
Hi Clive
What are you doing on 21st January 2012? May give you a real job next time. Great to have your help and thanks.
Results on website www.alangreenwood.biz/index.html Any corrections please let me know. May have credited the wrong person with 20 minutes.
Cannot take any credit for apple crumble . Only time I touch it is when it goes down my throat. There are just too many people in the process to mention them all but they all have to match Carole's exacting standards. Never knew you could talk so much about custard. It is great stuff though.
Alan I am listed as 45th - but I was actually 47th as Cath Lawson then Leanne Haugue finished in front of me. Thanks to both of them - to Cath for her knowledge of the route and friendly chat and Leanne for being generally bossy and shouting a lot in an encouraging manner. It was a pleasure to run with the pair of them.
A great event, many thanks to Alan and the whole team who were all cheerful and helpful, an absolute credit to the LDWA and the outdoors fraternity in general.
Please excuse my ignorance but how do I open the results, when I click on finishing times I get a screen with several icons but they just result in pages of jumbled up letters and numbers.
I've just found I can open it fine on firefox, but have the same probelms on explorer, not sure why this should be. I'm glad I wasn't the only one having these problems.
...and I'm also feeling a bit guilty about being listed 33rd, first of a group of 7 given 3:53. I think I was probably last of the 7, certainly behind Chris & Rachel. The moral is, get your entry in early. I think I'm only listed ahead of them because the list's sorted on minute then start number.
I wouldn't worry about details of results. It's non-competitive anyway. The LDWA ethos is about enjoying doing the route. If your time's recorded - and it isn't at all LDWA events - and is accurate to a minute or two, that's a added bonus. Thanks to Alan not only for doing that but for publishing the times as well, and so quickly.
There's a bit of a danger that as more fell runners do LDWA events that it gets forgotten that whilst they're about challenge, they're not exactly 'races'. (This was an issue that drew very heated comments on the CVFR site when The Hebden was chosen as a club championship event.)
None of the above comments are intended to be critical of Splatcher, who (I'm equally sure) wasn't being critical of the way the results are done.
It's worth bearing in mind however for any other clubs thinking of putting LDWA events into their own championships that times are nearly always to the minute and not to the second. Also, runners/walkers often inadvertently stray from the official route which can lead to all sorts of unseemly wrangles over 'shortcutting'.
Sorry about the results. They were done on Widows 7 and Excel 2010 with a format xlsx. Will PDF them in the next hour.
Hi Paul
I am afraid you are stuck with 45th rather than 47th. The reason for this has been explained in another post. We welcome runners (you are a great crowd and one day may want to join us) but if you are in a championship we are not geared up to provide timing to the second. I wanted to explain this to CVFR when I heard they were putting us in their championship but did not manage it due to holidays away.
Just spotted the comment that there may have been a fatality is this true?
My first LDWA event - loved it had a great time - superb organisation and a very enjoyable day. Fantastic cakes too!
Many thanks.
Very sorry to hear about to fatality. My sympathies to the family.
I don't care at all about position or even timing, other than that I time myself to see how I'm doing against previous years. I love LDWA events, & I'm perfectly happy when when they're not timed at all (my last event was the Reservoir Roundabout, which was exactly that). I've certainly no complaints about the Hebden - one of the best events there is!
Deepest sympathies to family and friends of the walker that passed away, as Clive mentioned earlier he was doing something he loved, hope his passing was painless and his spirit walks on.
Yes. I regret it is true. It happened before CP1 when an entrant collapsed. A number of fellow walkers tried to resucitate him as did the ambulance team when they arrived but it was to no avail. His partner who was on the long route and not walking with him was well ahead and was told at CP4. She withdrew and then was taken to the mortuary by Hilary, who agreed to deliver the sad news to her. A very sad episode but as has already been reflected, he was doing what he wanted to do at the time and did not suffer.
Dreadful for the family, but tough too on the organisers and marshals. My thoughts are with all.
Results have been amended after I looked at the marshals sheet for the short route people. Hope all ok now. Will pass on messages to Alan's partner, Diane.
Lovely to meet you on Saturday Alan G! Thanks for another fab day in Calderdale. Great to see so many friends. Thoughts go out to the family of the deceased; terribly sad news
Sorry to hear that Splatcher.
A write up from my club mate about the event.

Thanks for those kind words! Not sure what i would put the improvement down to, but certainly the fact that i wasnt carrying several kg's of flapjack may have contributed!
I suspect it was down to getting on the "KCAC Express" near the start....... It had an Engine Driver, two Stokers and a Gaurd and i just hung onto the Guardsvan until 15 miles.......at that point the coupling snapped, probably due to the excess baggage tagging along!..... from then on I just hung on the best I could.
Nice to see you on Saturday Steamy and well done on a good run. That marathon will be a doddle :closed:
