Knee has been niggling since july but giving me a bit of jipp at moment, going to have a break after weekend
After a physio appointment for right hamstring and back problem this afternoon got all clear to have a run out tonight and left calf pull!!:mad: why am I so injury prone  looks like I'll be getting back into my swimming.
Launched myself off the MTB last night extensive soft tissue damage. Ow! Ow!
Not a bit of pain from shin today on bike, did a bit of running at one point over the boggy moors. Had a spill though, and gashed me other leg and bruised my hip:rolleyes:
Never looked at this thread before...i had to have my eyelid stitched back together once, about 5 stitches if i remember rightly. The anaesthetic was going in through the needle and out of the hole and running down my face.
wondering what shin splints feel like? i have a right knee problem (eg diff going downstairs sometimes in the first day after a long run) but also am now experiencing bit of pain eminating from the knee down the right leg a bit, usually gets better with rest, ran sunday (11 miles) still a bit sore tho now so probs won't run til tomorrow...anybody had experience of shin splints? does this sound familiar? ......carlisle half in less than 2 weeks....any thoughts appreciated :)
Shin splint pain (from what I remember) eminates from the centre of the shin and is much worse going downhill - uphill is not too bad.
I've had two bad, long term experiences with shin splints, both brought on by running on hard surfaces and (I believe) an overlength stride resulting in heavy heel striking.
I agree with Ady in that the pain eminates from the centre of the shin. To me it felt like the front of my shin was being pushed against a round metal bar such as an iron ladder rung. At first it felt like just bruising, but built up week by week until each step was making my eyes water.:(
I had minor problems on and off for years until I changed my running style and haven't suffered since (fingers crossed).
In all cases though the pain was purely concentrated on the centre to lower half of the shin and to be honest I didn't have any trouble with the knee at all.
Hope it clears up soon.:)
Ian.
Thanks guys for the comments, after reading these and thinking on it I am wondering if my problems might be more of a illiotibial band thing, gonna look into it a bit more and perhaps see a physio (when i can fit it in...still at work now which is eating into my running time arrrrrrgh!)...thanx tho :)
Thanks Zoot...in that case I think it may not be shin splints as although i do get some pain in the shin area, the pain seems to eminate more from the knee moving downwards, with pain goin down the stairs at times and sometimes difficulties extending the lower leg up from the knee with a sharp pain at times when I attempt this, however the shin itself is not tender to the touch.....i realise for some the question may have appeared a bit basic but i do appreciate your thoughts thank you :) i think perhaps my descriptive powers at times are lacking!.....
todays injury...... well.....
I guess technically it's not an injury although at the time it was bl00dy painful although I'm sure much merriment will be had at my expense:rolleyes:
running down a steep slope today with dying bracken and thistles mixed in I stood on a large dying thistle as I took my foot of it is sprang back like a catapult. the pain was instantaneous:eek: and would not stop, I looked down and there embedded in my crotch was about 100 needles:o I had to stand there looking like I rode a hundred miles bare back until I'd pulled them all out one by one.
I felt such a pr..k:o
well a lot more than one actually.
 sounds a right BALLbag of an injury Ian :D
Twisted knee. No swelling, just pain in and around back of knee.
Can still walk, hobble, can't really balance on one leg with it.
Hoping rest will cure it for the weekend.
Nearly sliced the end of my index finger off fixing my bike. Not sure how I have done it, but didn't even realise it was cut for a while, until the blood started coating all the parts :p
Just fell off my bike and re-opened a gash that had just healed which I got on the fell running navigation course on the same knee that I had earlier that week fallen onto a stone on whilst running and had swelled to twice the size. It's a hat trick. Can I be excused a knee injury for a few months please?
My knee is not a pretty sight generally...kind of knobbly and misshapen (no it wasn't always like that!) but I like to think it adds character especially when seen just below the hem of a nice dress.
Just went round the block on my MTB, felt ok! Steady MTB tomorrow it is then!! :)
Can't run though :x
Made the serious, and very stupid, mistake of attempting to long-jump last night .
Result: Fernando Torres type injury which has put me out of the Burley Bridge Hike tomorrow, and probably out of Pendle too. But am I downhearted? Hell, yes. :(
Sorry to hear Tussockface.
If I could share in some of your downheartedness I was hoping to break my fell racing duck at Boulsworth on Sunday, have been looking forward to it for a while with much enthusiasm but was brought to a crippling halt on a training run last night.
Started feeling really uncomfortable after a couple of miles then sudden pain to the left of my leg just above the ankle.
X-rayed this afternoon with suggested stress fracture but has to be confirmed at fracture clinic monday.
Could possibly be on crutches for the amount of time I've actually been running. Probably too much too soon.
Totally miffed will miss the race and very little entusiasm left at the mo :(
Chubbs, these things come and go. The miffedness will probably increase until Sunday, peak at the time of the race, and then start to subside. By next Tuesday you'll be starting to focus on your next target, which (having been thwarted this time) you'll approach with even more grit and determination! Once you have the diagnosis, you'll start setting yourself fresh timescales.
It's hard to be knocked out before your first race.
Let us know how things go on Monday, and good luck with the rehab. Hope to see you when you finally make your debut.
Cheers TF. :)
Any news, Chubbs?
I'm jogging again after my adductor strain. Managed a mile slow jog on the flat last night, and am going out now to try 2/3 miles at an easy pace. If I don't get a reaction I'll try a couple of small hills tomorrow and a few more on Thursday. By that time I should know if it's worth heading to Pendle on Saturday or not.
Hi Tussockface.
Went to fracture clinic Monday. Could not see anything conclusive on the x-rays so left leg has been put in plaster from knee down and have been given calliper/crutchy type thingys. Now have to await an appointment for a bone scan involving injections and dyes  allowing for a much clearer diagnosis. Follow-up appointment in December :(
Got over the self-pity now, could be a lot worse. Just struggling with the frustration/debilitation of crutches but mainly the prospect of not being able just go for a run and escape all the toss-pottery on the box. I'M A FELLRUNNER - Get Me Out of Here!
On the bright side with all this hopping about on crutches I rule on the single right-legged squats :D
Diagnoses are often protracted, multi-stage affairs. In fact, I suspect the intention is to draw things out as long as possible so that whatever it is that's gone wrong has time to right itself before anyone has to commit themselves to saying what they think it is.
All the best.
Bah, injuries are so depressing!!
Just heal ffs, so I can run lol!!
:/
Well, I am NOT happy.
I have awful buttock discomfort.........piriformis??
It came on during a lovely head-torcher on Thurs.
Ibuprofen has been required.
Any suggestions as to an overnight cure........I am limping.
BOO.
Does anyone know if a "courtesy buttock" is availiable on the NHS? (I will return it in good (ish) condition once my own is healed.)
got a trapped nerve in my back which is giving me jip in the buttock (no smirking!) seeing a physio which seems to be costing me a fortune! not sure if i should go to an osteopath too just as a second opinion?,,,, any advice anyone?
I would be collaborative with your physiotherapist (open communication is vital). If you don't trust/understand/agree with what you're being told, or what is being done.......say so (in a +ve way!).
If you know (by reputation) a good osteopath, then it's worth a go, but don't see two independent clinicians simultaneously without discussion...........How will you know what's working/not working??
Other sporting folk are usually pretty good at recommending someone who is skilled in the area of sports realated problems.........?ask the forum for a trusted clinician (of whatever variety) in your area?
If some of this helps, I'm glad...........I am still in need of a "courtesy buttock" (see my post above), so perhaps we could share a working pair between us??
Can I have Friday to Sunday as time-share??
Best of luck.
K.
thanks for the advice chugger,
i guess im just a bit synical when it comes to asking my physio wheather i should see a osteopath,,, like he's actually going to recommend i go else where.
i know you cant put a price on health but i really cant afford it! although i'm going to ring my occupational health rep to see if i can get something through my job.
hope your buttock heals quickly!
Good luck!
I still think that if you are going to spend money, go and see someone with a good reputation.........someone who regularly works with "athletes" and has some idea of what you're approach (mental and physical) to recovery is like.
In my experience a therapist (of whatever sort) who regularly has contact with sportspoeple will be used to be questionned and taking the very collaborative approach we pushy folk need.
I work in the NHS and would never have anything said against it, but your average clinician there will not have a huge number of sporting people on their caseloads..........I know this is a generalisation and "all generalistaions are rubbish"http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/images/icons/icon7.gif.
Let us know how you get on with occy health!
well occupational health basically told me that since I've had 5 sessions with my private therapist then referring me to their physio wouldn't make any difference because they only offer 3 fast track sessions, i told them i didn't mind only 3 session as it would at least give me a second opinion/confirmation to what i've already been diagnosed with. occy health advised me to see my gp which i am going to do monday, god bless nhs! my wife works for them too.
why is there always a temptation in the back saying just go for a run anyway, especially since it doesn't hurt when i run! just afterwards!
The temptation is always there becuse a) we sometimes get away with it and b) as a person who runs, ignoring pain is part of what we have trained ourselves to do.
I still have need of a "courtesy buttock" and dare not run....some soft tissue massge has helped......is it worth a call to the physiotherapist??
